PREFACE "One thing I know, that whereas once I was blind, now I can see. . ." John 9:25 ------------- If you are a man, 50 years of age or older, you will want to read this book and have a copy handy, because you have a nine out of ten chance of having a problem with your prostate. In fact you have a one out of five chance that your problem will be cancer of your prostate. What is even more startling is that you have the power to do something to help prevent it, and/or to treat it swiftly so that it doesn't become damaging or fatal. ---------- The purpose of this book is to: ------------ 1) persuade individuals to make it a habit to get a regular medical check-up --------- 2) help individuals to dispel any fears that they may harbor regarding medical check-ups, their processes and the results thereof 3) persuade individuals who have been diagnosed with a prostate problem to take some action and seek to have it diagnosed, and get the appropriate treatment quickly 4) persuade individuals to care for themselves, especially their prostate, regardless of whether they have a problem or not. PROSTATE! PROSTATE! PROSTATE! A Problem of Men by Harold Usher and Dr. Joseph Chin When London, Ontario City Councillor Harold Usher, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he was, concerned and scared, as most men in that situation are, to the extent that, instead of taking action as he should have, he went into denial in order to avoid making a decision. Most men do that also. To keep it out of his mind, Harold immersed himself deep into work. Finally, his wife persuaded him to go to the library and find some books on the subject. He went, and returned home with two books and two videos and deposited them on the table and never looked at them again. Finally, one day, his wife plugged one of the videos into the VCR and viewed it, then later called him to look at it. It was a video of two celebrities - one, a U.S. General who, when diagnosed with prostate cancer, told his doctor to do what was necessary to cure it; and the other, a Canadian Broadcaster who, when diagnosed, delayed taking action. That awakened Harold and sent him on a further 18 months search for information - to understand more about the prostate and prostate cancer, as well as diagnosis, available treatments, and after-effects. He emerged from that prolonged search with sufficient information to ask intelligent questions which led him to choose a treatment intelligently. Harold subsequently collaborated with his renowned Canadian Urologist, Scientist and Professor, Dr. Joseph Chin, also of London, to put all that he learned and experienced in a bold informative, educational and inspiring “One-of-a-Kind” 388 pages/45 Chapters book entitled: "PROSTATE! PROSTATE! PROSTATE! A Problem of Men." The book, published on demand by Trafford publishing, can be viewed and purchased on line at www.trafford.com/Bookstore (search for USHER) and at various Bookstores (see bottom) throughout Southwestern Ontario, Canada and directly from Harold Usher at husher@rogers.com. This book will save lives. The book was written to encourage men to get a regular medical check-up (yearly) and to take action quickly when they are diagnosed with a prostate problem, particularly prostate cancer. It is also written to educate patients of prostate problem and their caring relatives and friends, so that a urologist, after diagnosing a patient with prostate cancer, can recommend that the patient read the book and return to see him after. It arms the patient with more intelligent questions to ask the urologist. It is a patient-friendly, easy-to-read, caring and compassionate compilation of information about man's prostate, describing what's needed to be known after a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, including therapeutic options. It is written for the benefit, reading pleasure and learning, of all men, and all women who have men in their lives (since it is found in most cases it's the women who have to push the men to take action). Harold Usher informs people that the book entails everything you ever want to know about the prostate, that pesky little chestnut shape organ situated below and adjacent to your bladder, between your pelvic bone and rectal wall, that provides the ingredients for making your babies. It is written so that a urologist, after diagnosing a man with prostate cancer, can give him a copy of the book and say, "You have prostate cancer, take this book and read it and come back and see me in three weeks," and on his return the man will have more intelligent questions to ask the urologist. He says everything the patient needs to know to understand the problem, in order to formulate and ask those questions to subsequently make an informed choice of treatment decision, is included in the book. It does not replace what your doctor advises you. However, one should know this information before being struck with this dreadful disease, considering that one in seven men will have prostate cancer and 20% of them will die from it. Knowing what is written in this book may save your life, or your man's life. Dr. Joseph Chin explains that the book is a "one-of-a-kind," written in a simple style that is easily read and understood and easy to wade through. It takes a complex subject and simplify it for the ordinary layman to understand. It is written from the perspective of the patient and as such, it is of definite advantage for the patient. He also emphasizes it is imperative that men get a regular (yearly) medical check-up which includes a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE), and when diagnosed with a prostate problem, particularly prostate cancer, take action as quickly as possible. Harold Usher is a Prostate Cancer Survivor;an Author; an Engineer; a Motivational Speaker; a Personnel Development Trainer and a City Councillor in London, Ontario, CANADA. In February 1998 Harold was diagnosed with prostate cancer and became concerned about his lack of understanding of his condition. He thenceforth embarked on a mission to fulfill two goals - to learn more about this disease that had invaded his prostate and to understand what treatments were available and which was best for him. . What he found out was stunning, to put it mildly, but real. He found out that few people really think much about their health; most men are reluctant to submit to a medical check-up, especially if it includes a digital rectal examination; many men would prefer to not know if they have prostate cancer;few men understand their prostate, its location, function and significance; having prostate cancer does not mean death, if it is detected early and treated quickly enough; and there are several methods of treatments available for prostate disorders, but one best for your cancer. He also discovered that most of the time, it is the women in a man's life who has to take the bull by the horn and move them on to action, including subsequent visitation to the doctor after being diagnosed and acquiring reading and/or viewing material for further understanding of the condition. As a result of his clearer understanding, Harold chose surgery as his preferred treatment option and underwent radical prostatectomy in March 2000. He subsequently incorporated his findings into this book to enlighten men, and women who have men in their lives, about the prostate. He offers them the many answers that he had wanted, but did not have at his fingertips. He tells frankly and simply what many doctors do not have time to tell, but what many doctors and prostate cancer survivors agree ought to be understood by the patient and his family. Harold Usher is the owner and President of "Adventures in . . . " SEMINARS & SPEECHES. He has written papers and books on personnel development subjects and has spoken to audiences across Canada, the United States and in Central America. His bold, inspiring and entertaining messages and talks on life enrichment subjects, draw top reviews from his audience always. Dr. Joseph Chin is a renowned Canadian Urologic Surgeon and a leading authority on prostate cancer treatment with vast experience in the area of radical prostatectomy. He has treated thousands of men with prostate cancer over the past 25 years. With a strong interest in the area of minimally invasive therapy for prostate cancer, Dr. Chin is Canada's leading authority on Cryosurgery and is the first Canadian Urologist to perform a robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. He is also a member of the Canadian team conducting the clinical trial for HIFU. Recognizing that this book will make a worthwhile contribution to the area of patients' information and education and provide an invaluable service for the prostate cancer community, he participated enthusiastically in the development of its contents to ensure its medical accuracy, completeness and that its scientific explanations would be comprehensible for readers with various backgrounds.
