(From Chapter: Scicence, Theology, Medicine) The truth of Mind shows conclusively how it is that matter seems to be, but is not. Divine Science, rising above physical theories, excludes matter, resolves things into thoughts, and replaces the objects of physical limited sense with spiritual ideas. I introduced the term CHRISTIAN SCIENCE to designate the scientific system of divine healing. The revelation consists of two parts: 1. The discovery of this divine Science of Mind-healing, through a spiritual sense of Scriptures and through the teachings of the Counselor, as promised by Jesus. 2. The proof, by present day demonstration, that the miracles of Jesus did not specially belong to a privileged few or at a time now ended. Miracles illustrate an ever-operating divine Principle which indicate the eternality of the scientific order and continuity of being. (From Chapter: Creation) The universe of Spirit is peopled with spiritual beings and its government is divine Science. People are the offspring of the highest qualities of Mind. We understand spiritual existence in proportion as our treasures of Truth and Love expand. Human beings must gravitate toward God, their affections and aims grow spiritual, humane—they must near the broader interpretations of being, and gain some proper sense of the infinite—in order for sin and mortality to be put off. This scientific consciousness of being, forsaking matter for Spirit, by no means suggests our absorption into Love and the loss of our identity, but actually gives us a more magnificent identity, a wider sphere of thought and action, a more expansive love, a higher and more permanent peace. (From Chapter: Prayer) Some Bible versions include an extra line at the end of the Lord’s Prayer. Bible scholars think that a later copyist may have added it; however, it does not affect the meaning of the prayer itself and has been included here in what I understand to be the spiritual sense of the Lord’s Prayer: Our Father in heaven, Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious, Hallowed be Your name, One sacred nature, Your kingdom come, Your government is come; You are ever-present, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Enable us to know—as in heaven, so on earth—God is omnipotent, supreme. Give us this day our daily bread. Give us grace for today; feed the famished heart. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And Love is reflected in love. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. And God does not lead us into temptation, but delivers us from sin, disease, and death. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. For God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All. (From Chapter: Christian Science Practice) MENTAL TREATMENT ILLUSTRATED Don’t be afraid The Science of mental practice is susceptible of no misuse. Self-centeredness does not appear in the practice of Truth or Christ’s Science. If mental practice is abused or is used in any way except to promote right thinking and doing, the power to heal mentally will diminish until the practitioner’s healing ability is completely lost. Scientific practice begins with Christ’s keynote of harmony, “Do not be afraid!” Job said: “Every terror that haunted me has caught up with me; what I dreaded has overtaken me.” Naming diseases My first discovery in the student’s practice was this: If the student silently called the disease by name when arguing against it, as a general rule the body would respond more quickly. This is similar to people responding more readily when their name is spoken. However, the disease was named because the student was not perfectly attuned to divine Science, and needed arguments of truth for reminders. If Spirit or the power of divine Love bears witness to the truth, this is the ultimatum, the scientific way, and the healing is instantaneous. (From Chapter: Review) Question. Do Christian Scientists have any religious policy or creed? Answer. They do not, if by that term is meant doctrinal beliefs. The following is a brief exposition of the important points, or religious tenets, of divine Science: 1. As followers of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life. 2. We acknowledge and respect one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His son, one Christ; the Holy Spirit or divine Counselor; and man and woman in God’s image and likeness. 3. We acknowledge God’s forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that drives out evil as unreal. But sin will continue to be self-punished as long as the belief lasts. 4. We acknowledge Jesus’ atonement as the evidence of divine, healing Love, unfolding our unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower. We acknowledge that our salvation is through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death. 5. We acknowledge that the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection served to advance faith into the understanding of eternal Life, the allness of Soul, Spirit; in other words, advance faith out of the nothingness of matter/energy. 6. And we solemnly promise to be spiritually aware, to pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do to others as we would have them do to us; and to be merciful, just, and pure. 21st Century Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures CONTENTS Chapters include... Cheryl Petersen has felt the emerging new consciousness that ushers healing and purpose into life. After being healed of 2nd degree burns on half of her face, Cheryl correlated her experience to Christian (divine) Science as taught by Mary Baker Eddy in her book Science and Health first written in the 19th century. Cheryl therefore has revised Science and Health, which serves to release words from sense and flux, to yield a perception of divine Science in the 21st century. This is the 4th edition.
