Set against the backdrop of 1960's Haiti, Lasting Impressions tells the story of lovers Fritz and Crystal. After completing high school, Fritz leaves Haiti, and his beloved Crystal, to study in Paris for four years. Thereafter he intends to return, marry Crystal, and take over his parents' import-export business. However, four months into his studies his mother visits him in Paris. She has never approved of Fritz's relationship with Crystal and brings with her evidence to prove she has been unfaithful to him. Forced to abandon Paris, a devastated Fritz goes to live with cousins in New York. There he shuns all help, but after joining a swim team gradually regains his confidence and self-esteem, even investing in a business endeavor in Haiti. Five years after leaving Haiti, Fritz returns to begin a new life. Little does he know his business endeavor will bring him face-to-face with his past, forcing him to accept several painful truths.
