Go on a spiritual journey with the author, as he shows how one does not need expensive equipment to talk to the dead. He takes you to the heart of Acadiana in south central Louisiana where spirits at a bed and breakfast tell him that a young woman's suicide there was actually a murder. He brings you to the heart of New Orleans where a spirit committed suicide and tells Stanley how he died. Listen to slaves from the most haunted house in New Orleans, the Laulaurie House, tell of the torture and abuse they suffered at the hands of Madame Delphine Laulaurie. Go to Laurel Valley plantation, and hear spirits talk about a murder that took place in the old slave quarters. Listen to intelligent spirits speak to Stanley from the Mojave Desert to the ruins in the foothills of Delos, Greece. Hear intelligent responses from the spirits of the parents of Stanley and his wife, Barbara, as they answer questions that only they could know the answers when they were alive. You will know you're never alone, again, once you read these true, captivating stories.

The book chronicles the life of an Austrian couple and their young daughter, who came to live in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) in the late 1920s. It describes how the head of the family, the future Government Sociologist of Tanzania, started out as a wealthy planter, and was then forced by the world economic situation into looking for other work, which took the family all over the country. It tells of their lives under very basic conditions and how his wife and daughter had to cope with their changed circumstances. The story also contrasts the life of the daughter in the African countryside with her experiences in a brand-new Mission school. The book shows how despite hardship, the family managed to make the best of their lives, having adventures along the way. It records the friendship they enjoyed with the Africans, and the interest the family had in their lives, their music and dance.

This book is entitled Travel, Research, and Teaching in Guatemala and Mexico: In Search of the Pre-Columbian Heritage (volume II, Mexico). This book in its totality of two volumes has various facets: it is comprised of anecdotes and thoughts on travel, research, and teaching in Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico from 1962 to 2000; it is a reflection on important topics and concepts of pre-Columbian culture, and finally, it is a summary of classroom guidelines and Professor Curran’s notes on a major work on the civilizations of pre-Columbian Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico and important documentary films on the same. Volume II treats Mexico. An introduction and overview of the sites in Mexico is seen in text and photos from the Museo de Antropología e Historia in Mexico City, the best of its kind. Again, volume II treats modern urban cities and rural towns near the pre-Columbian sites: Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Cristóbal de las Casas, and Mérida in the Yucatán. The well-known pre-Columbian sites in volume II are Teotihuacán, Monte Albán, Mitla, Palenque, Uxmal, Chichén-Itzá, and Tulum. The book is richly illustrated with black-and-white travel photos by Curran.

Scenes the Writer Shows {forty-one places a poem can go} is a collection of poems from travels and experiences. They describe situations and moments in life (mine or someone else’s) that were either positive or negative. A few poems deal with teenage angst and issues of personal experience either in my own or someone else’s life. “The Hustler,” for example, loosely mirrors my life and experience as a disabled person. It is a montage of my years living in Downtown Minneapolis, riding public transit and adapting to urban life. Word-play, meter and music used often to create images that will draw the reader into the poem. For example, in “Waxing on Flames,” I tried to create the image of a bonfire by a river with young scouts growing up as flames nurture them along: "We were young and at the mercy of our means and we flung ourselves Down upon the flames for what we knew felt right; I bridled from Those heated pains that boiled and tested me; and knelt down to Pray upon the iron grate while Moonlight splintered trees to shake Ripe, fierce winds I’d learned to hate;" My poems travel to England, to Scotland and Wales. They go to the Mid-east and to Norway. They go from my home in Minneapolis to New York and Tennessee.

Although only 10 stories here yet they interestingly revealed how the writer at his teens, handicapped with limited education and funds, was forced to cheat his way into Chinese and British Navy to become a sailor and later worked as chief officer on freighters running through the blockades; how he dealt in Communist China when confronted with Communist's irrational teenage cadres and what happened when Nationalist's special-agent wanted him to hyjack the ship to Taiwan. Then what did he do when seeing a lady jumping overboard which also brought out another story about a man stopped at the brink of jumping down the tallest building in Canton and started a new life in Macao. The writer also recorded his long, unfulfilled secret love affair that spilled out the thousand-year-old inhuman tradition in China; the effect on a man when nepotism and the closely-circled territory before and during early nineteen forties in the old Chinese Navy; how a British sailor sacrificed his opportunity to join his ship in order to help an unknown Chinese sailor in England; then in Hong Kong, the power-struggling for the control of a ship and her 'human-cargo' (soldiers) during the civil war in China. Fascinating and informative stories.

This book was written for a target audience, the men and women in law enforcement. Mature subject matter and graphic details are included in my writing. It should not be read by persons under the age of 18. This autobiography is based on some true events, however, has been fictionalized and all persons appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real people, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. Let’s just say human behavior in general finds it hard to keep things to themselves. Secrets are broken. Someone else could have wrote this book but to my knowledge, nobody did. So this book was written from my perspective, experiences, and interpretation of public testimony.

The Temagami region of northern Ontario has been a magnet for recreational canoeists since the 1890s, when city dwellers began embarking on long, gruelling trips to reach its unfettered wilderness. The land is steeped in the history of its tribal inhabitants, the Teme-Augama Anishnabai (TAA), whose roots are 6,000 years deep. At the turn of the 20th century, the TAA still hunted on their traditional family territories, trading pelts at the Hudson’s Bay Company post on Bear Island. The railway arrived in 1904, easing travel from all over North America. Steamships conveyed passengers to all five arms of the lake where rustic resorts and youth camps were popping up. Soon, the village of Temagami became a tourism hub. Logging and mining would later diversify the economy. The province of Ontario began leasing the lake’s more than 1,200 islands in 1906. In 1931 cottagers united against logging near the mainland shoreline under the Timagami Association banner, now the Temagami Lakes Association. Temagami is the only Ontario lake where mainland shoreline development is banned Temagami Lakes Association: The Life and Times of a Cottage Community recounts Temagami’s history to 2011, and examines the Association’s often convoluted, occasionally controversial, relationships with the TAA, various levels of government, villagers and within its own ranks. The narrative is lightened by cottagers’ tales of mice invasions, flesh-embedded fish hooks, encounters with big screen stars, cabin construction gone awry and the like. More than 150 photos enliven the text.

The image of the travelling American gringo is stereotyped as the pot-bellied tourist bedecked in a Hawaiian t-shirt hanging around a beachfront resort mastering the ubiquitous phrase “Una cerveza por favor.” Short Straws doesn’t denigrate itself to that base level. After all, the author couldn’t afford resort rates. Instead, he hoofed around Central America for six months living out of his backpack. Short Straws is a collection of 84 off-the-cuff vignettes from off-the-beaten path. Restricted to a modestly self-imposed $25 daily budget, in keeping with the author’s own frugal lifestyle, the reader is drawn into the Developing World status of this region while being engaged with oft-unpolitically correct insights and observations. Through the continuous use of humour, self-righteousness and colourful language, traits of the know-it-all gringo, when reading between the lines the author is frequently the master of his own misfortunes when struggling to adapt to the challenges of Central American travel. Whether it’s almost carelessly missing his travel connections, encounters with the authorities or perilously bathing in insect-infected waters, readers will shake their heads wondering not just how could the author have enjoyed his odyssey but, more importantly, how was he fortunate enough to have escaped unscathed?

Adventures of a “Gringo” Researcher in Brazil in the 1960s or In Search of Cordel is an entertaining and informative account of Professor Curran’s first foray in Brazil. In this book he tells two stories: the research to collect cordel and, perhaps more importantly, the travel and the adventures of the year in Brazil. The two are inseparable and complement each other. Chapters include Recife and the Northeast, Travels to the interior of the Northeast, research in Brazil’s colonial capital of Salvador da Bahia, research and tourism in Rio de Janeiro, trips to the interior of Rio, including Ouro Preto, Congonhas do Campo, and a memorable trip on a wood-burning stern wheeler on the Sao Francisco River in Minas Gerais and Bahia, and finally, research in the Amazon Basin, including both Belem do Para and Manaus. The account is not in academic language but in a colloquial, conversational style. Curran writes as one sitting down with the reader and telling tales of his travels, and perhaps with the author and reader enjoying a caipirinha, or a Brazilian draft beer choppe as they talk.
