Bored with the daily grind and keen to escape the rat-race, Hazel and Simon Jackson did what so many dream of - they sold their house and possessions, bought a motor home, took their thirteen year old son out of school and travelled Europe. They left winter behind and for the next year they barbecued on beaches, skied on mountains, swam in warm seas and danced at fiestas. Encountering everything from Spanish hospitals, and the Guardia Civil when they were robbed in Spain - to being ripped off in Rome, propositioned in Sicily, dazzled in Dubrovnik, and almost drowned in Slovenia... they wild-camped their way through southern Europe, in a motor home affectionately known as The Beast. They slept, ate and lived in a different place almost every day, meeting locals off the beaten track, making new, lasting friendships... and shared it all with their teenage son Jack. If you enjoy travel and need to be re-assured that you aren't the only ones who break-down, get lost, or stuck in impossible situations, then this is the book for you. Join them as they travel for a year through Europe, from the luxury of your arm-chair. Brimming with useful tips and historical information, this is a book full of humour, catastrophes and everything else that comes with life on the road. It is a dream come true. There are many travel books on the shelves of bookshops, but few travel writers describe the day-to-day grind of travelling through a continent such as South America with a partner in the way that Tony Gant does. His outlook on life, combined with a degree of cynical humour that is unique to Londoners, and totally misunderstood by the rest of the world, banded together to create, not only a brilliant situation comedy about the rigors of back-packing, but also to produce a book that is a mine of practical information to anyone who intends to visit this mysterious continent. This is especially so if the aim is to travel as much as possible by rail. You may not agree with all of his thoughts and actions, notably if you a 5-star tourist, or a reader of the Guardian newspaper (or indeed his one-time travel partner, a German lady by the name of Marita), but it is guaranteed that you will find this book hard to put down once you have embarked on his journey. This book is the result of 18 months of work after the discovery of a pile of jottings (Tony called them 'diaries') in a drawer at his one time home in the Midlands. I have tried to retain the 'diary' feel to this incredible story and Tony's way of expressing himself. Therefore, grammar and sentence construction have, in place, not been strictly adhered to. Dean Murphy editor of the original script Most of the names in this book have been altered to protect the innocent... and the guilty! One or two of the place names have been similarly treated.

Why on earth would you give up a NZD 70,000+ job, worldwide-recognised Swiss education, strong relationships with family and friends, accumulating money in a Swiss bank account and easy access to the finest chocolate for a student life in New Zealand? Blame it on a gut feeling and itchy feet. 23 years old, well traveled, but still a bit green behind her ears, Swiss-born chocolate-obsessed Olivia is hungry for more and leaves her perfectly organised life behind to start from scratch. She decides to enroll in a Tourism diploma program in a country where there are fifteen times more sheep than people, they have ice cream called "goody goody gum drop", where central heating is replaced by electric blankets and Xmas is celebrated in summer. The idea sounds exciting and fun. And absolutely insane. Far away from home and all by herself, she soon realizes that traveling through a country and living there are two completely different shoes. Being separated from her familiar environment and social circle makes her try harder and she achieves things she only dreamed of back home. Such as running a Marathon, tramping around Stewart Island for eleven days by herself or completing a degree in her fifth language with receiving three awards along the way. Olivia adapts to the relaxed Kiwi attitude and at the same time learns to respect her upbringing. She starts losing up and doing things the Kiwi way: Walking around barefoot and have loads of BBQs in summer, supporting the mighty All Blacks, moan about Australians and watch DIY TV shows. Make yourself a hot chocolate and blob on your couch to read about the life of a young and not quite grown up Swiss Miss that undertakes some serious soul searching in the Land of the Long White Cloud.

The signpost that stood at the top of Main Street was the perfect symbol to justify the significance of Kenmare. The ten arrows pointing East and West placing this bustling market town at the very epicentre of wild County Kerry. The many roads that did indeed lead to Kenmare, proof of its geographical importance, but barley hinting at the rich and chequered history of this 'most English' of Irish towns. For Stan Goddard, a dedicated photographer, with a rambler's soul and a passion for history, Kenmare was literally like a breath of fresh air. Its valleys and mountains and glens of Kerry forging an association that was to bring him back every summer for almost fifty years. And it was to be a fruitful association, for though to many it was little more than a small, rural community hidden by the shadow of Killarney, Kenmare was a place that had been touched by history more than once. The town had visible links to the Bronze Age, Cardinals from Rome, Cromwell's surveyor General and nuns of the "Poor Clare's". It also endured social and political upheaval, famine and even emigration. Factors that were not just the story of Kenmare, but the very tale of Ireland itself. Now, reproduced in its original form, All Roads Lead to Kenmare offers the visitor to Kenmare a detailed, boots-on explanation of how nature, geography and man has impacted this beautiful town and why it is now considered by many to be a veritable jewel in the Ring of Kerry. Concise and accessible, All Roads is much more than another potted history and more like a personal walking tour of Kenmare, but a walking tour with all those little questions answered, all those little facts explained and barely a tourist trap in sight!

This is the story of a retired couple who decided to purchase an RV and who traveled up and down the eastern United States with their pets. The author describes in a forthright and vivid manner their experiences and the many problems they encountered. The final chapter, entitled "A Trip into Hell", should make anyone driving an RV shudder and is a powerful ending to what is a very interesting, informative and revealing story. The book is written in a unique chronological format and should be of great interest to anyone interested in RVs and RV travel. The author emphasizes that nothing in the book is fictionalized or distorted. Everything is based upon actual fact. The book describes the couple's decision to purchase an RV, what they went through when they purchased it and all of their subsequent experiences and the many problems they encountered traveling in it. In the introduction and first chapter the author discusses the costs of owning and operating an RV and provides an informative insight into an entire spectrum ranging from campgrounds to RV ownership in general. The author's direct and honest approach in expressing himself perhaps removes some of the myth of RV travel.

In celebrating my 40th birthday, I took a year-long sabbatical to fulfill some dreams. This book collects the journal entries that appeared on the website. As a result, this is meant to be read as a journal rather than as a story book of one coherent theme. A few years ago, I came to the realization that my life had been quite a blessing and that I would like to share this blessing with those who are less fortunate. Hence, the idea of a sabbatical was born. It was the best birthday gift I could have imagined for myself. There was no specific day-to-day plan as to how the year would be spent, lest it would feel too much like work. Basically, my intention was to spend approximately half of the time working with charitable organizations in Latin America - mainly in Costa Rica - while the rest of the time I would spend traveling and learning things that had always interested me. Along the way, I hoped to acquire a higher level of fluency in the Spanish language, to foster some new friendships and to gain a better understanding of the Latino culture, and myself.

Mary Victoria Wallis's Among the Pilgrims is the story of her two pilgrimages - one by bicycle in 1997 and one on foot in 1998 - in northern Spain along the thousand year old route to the shrine of St. James the Apostle at Santiago de Compostela. In ten chapters covering everything from medieval miracle tales to the modern perils of shin splints and flat tires, she gives her view, as a medievalist, outdoor enthusiast, and inquiring pilgrim with Buddhist leanings, of the five hundred mile trail to Santiago. Among the Pilgrims takes the reader through a landscape of both the past and the present, the real and the imagined, through a topography not only of village and field, but of mind and spirit as well. In the cultural remains of medieval pilgrimage, Mary searches for the spiritual seeds of modern pilgrimage. Using a personal and impressionistic style, Among the Pilgrims brings into relief the treasury of literature, art, architecture, music, philosophy and science that was born and transmitted along the Camino de Santiago. Early in her first trip, for instance, Mary climbs the pass over the Pyrenees into the Spanish town of Roncesvalles. Here, in 779 AD, Count Roland was slain, blowing a dying note upon his magical oliphant to summon help from King Charlemagne - thereby giving birth to Le Chanson de Roland - and French literature. On the dry plains of northern Castile, she discovers the cradle of many Western musical traditions. Further west, she comes upon a 12th-century Templars castle that Napoleon thought about blowing up only two hundred years ago. Far from being isolated cultural artifacts, these stories, places and treasures are part of a heritage reaching into our own time. They are also mirrors in which we can find ourselves. In the Middle Ages, the pilgrim's destination at Santiago was, after Jerusalem and Rome, the third most important in Christian Europe. Eight centuries later, when Napoleon's armies ravaged Spain during the Peninsular Wars, the pilgrimage died out almost completely. Among the Pilgrims reflects on the rise and fall of the Camino, from its glorious beginnings with the Spanish Reconquista, to its decline during the Renaissance and Reformation, its near death in the wars of the 19th Century, and its odd echoes that have since reverberated as far west as Mexico and Peru. Among the Pilgrims is also about the resurgence of the Camino and the pilgrim's spirit. In the 1960s, the number of travellers on the road to Santiago began to grow; by the year 2000, the tiny hamlets along the way were seeing thousands of pilgrims each summer: walkers, cyclists, even a few horseback riders. The rise of the environmental movement, along with eco- and cultural tourism, are in some ways modern expressions of the urge to pilgrimage. Many travellers seek a transcendent meaning, a new - or perhaps an ancient - sacredness in nature. In Among the Pilgrims, Mary looks at the idea of pilgrimage through her own and other's experiences on the Camino. She asks how our response to the route is informed by what we know of its past, and also by our own personal pasts. She asks too what contemporary meaning - if any - an old Christian trail has in a world where the forces of organized religion are being dispersed into personal quests for spiritual harmony and fulfillment. Among the Pilgrims explores how people today experience the Camino and how an important tradition in western civilization - the Christian pilgrimage - is being transformed in a secular world trying to renew its experience of place.

During two and three week periods in each of the last seven late-summers, I have wandered about southwest Wyoming's highways and two-track trails...learning much about the geographies of Great Divide Basin and many interesting sites immediately surrounding that awesome, fascinating, wind-blown and sun-burnished stretch of high desert, making too short, pleasurable journeys into nostalgia. During these seductive and productive travels, my eyes, ears, nose, hands and feet have researched, catalogued and accessioned much new material. Memories will lure me back for more.

Memoirs: Two - Sea Fever is a lively account of the seven years of "holiday time" that author Harry Furniss and his wife Enid spent exploring the B.C. coast in pleasure boats. Mind you, it took more than 40 years to rack up this astonishing record of "nights aboard" but looking back Furniss recalls each one a precious interlude of peace and relaxation from the perpetual grind of business life ashore. Many landlubbers are smitten with Sea Fever, the mysterious disease that drives otherwise normal people insane with desire to venture forth in total ignorance (and often total penury) to seek adventure on the bosom of the sea. There is only one known antidote -- repetition.

The experiences which form the basis of Slaying Apophis began in May of 1992 when I separated from my husband. I spent late winter through early spring 1994 traveling the Eurasian continent. Throughout the trip, sixteen students were under the guidance of three Eastern Michigan University professors and two tour managers. Under the rigorous conditions of travel, we got to know each other quite well. The journey became primarily one of self-discovery. I found myself searching for meaning and direction. In the process, I wrestled with, and at least wounded, several of my demons. My observations were written down as I experienced or remembered them. As I was preparing for publication what had begun as a private journal, I realized that some observations and class quotes were quasi-universals, philosophical road signs. I have highlighted these throughout the text as aphorisms, and compiled them all at the end of the book. Perhaps this composite picture of an adventure of discovery, and the wisdom gained, will serve others as well as myself. As the Chinese couplet on the cover proclaims, "may you be blessed with peace and safety wherever you are."
