The conventional method of measuring the stability of a yacht using the moment resistance curve, of necessity involves assumptions which are not true under many of the critical conditions that may cause a vessel to capsize. In heavy seas, there is considerable vertical and rotational movement, and inertia forces not considered in deriving the curve, come into effect. The dynamics are governed by Newton's laws of motion and when these laws are applied, the response of the vessel can be related to the sea state. The ability of a vessel to react to the sea varies with time and there are situations where it is minimised resulting in a full knockdown. The main thrust presented in this text views the problem of stability in small vessels as one of dynamics and not one which can be completely resolved or understood, by the solitary viewpoint of the "static" moment resistance curve.

The book has four broad divisions: the derivation of the static properties; the dynamics of ships where all the relevant equations are expressed in a standard form to enable a direct solution; the physics of simple waveforms of both large and small amplitude and how these can be combined to give a description of the ocean under various wind conditions. The final part looks at combining a vessel's characteristics and the sea state to predict its motion and stability. In every case a comparison is drawn between the static and dynamic responses. All of the material necessary to form a quantitative evaluation of a yacht's stability is provided in the text. The book concludes with a chapter giving the results of calculations based on the theory.

It is assumed that the reader has some knowledge of elementary calculus and is familiar with the basic physics of motion such as would be covered in the first two years of an engineering or science degree. However, in each chapter the conclusions are discussed in a non mathematical way and important results are clearly illustrated with diagrams.

The story of a young boy who left school at 14 to work in the shipyard of Harland Wolff, Belfast. He went to sea at 16 years as an officer cadet and eventually became a captain. He struggled to start his own shipping company, not for the love of the business but to be in shore employment, and to be with his family during the political problems in Northern Ireland. His return to the Merchant Navy and the formation in Northern Ireland of the Merchant Navy Association in the Province for the benefit of retired seafarers.

Northwest waters off Oregon and Washington pose unique dangers to boaters. All of the navigable bars that a boater must cross to reach the ocean, such as the Tillamook Bay Bar, the Columbia River and Depoe Bay are hazardous. When a boat is in danger or actually sinks, the Coast Guard comes to the rescue. Search and rescue itself poses hazards, often times compounded by delayed or inaccurate distress calls from the captain. In addition the captain may fail to provide timely communication and leadership to crew and passengers during the crises. This book reviews the sinking of five charter boats. Four of them, the Pearl-C, Cougar, Gambler, and the Taki-Tooo accounted for the greatest loss of life in the charter boat industry in Oregon and Washington. Survivors of these charter boats provide vivid and dramatic accounts of the sinkings and search and rescue. We also review the sinking with the loss of life of the Aleutian Enterprise in the Bering Sea, crab boats off the Oregon and Washington coast, as well as the loss of the Sea King during a storm as it was being towed across the Columbia River bar. We focus on the human element in decision making during emergencies at sea, and provide guidelines for boaters to consider their own experiences at sea with respect to safety. An understanding of the hazards on our Northwest waters are important to recreational boaters who go on their private boats to fish off shore.

The British Seagull outboard motor has been manufactured and distributed by England for over sixty years. During that time the engine has been known to be "The Best Outboard Motor for the World" and has gained a reputation for their reliability and durability.

"The Classic British Seagull" mainly deals with engines that are built between 1955 and to about 1996, but can also be used for the earlier 102's and the later EFRN's models.

This service manual is divided into three sections.

The first is for general running and operation of the motor, which includes: how to mount the motor on your transom, starting procedures, running the motor in different weather conditions, general information and maintenance.

The next section is on how to trouble-shoot a non-working engine and gives some suggestions on what to look for.

The third and final section is on servicing and the technical repair for different sections or parts of the motor.

The Classic British Seagull has a unique and different approach in trouble-shooting and servicing then from previously written manuals. In doing so, many of the hidden trade secrets are revealed. In addition this manual will probably give you the reason why something has happened and provide proven techniques to repair and prevent the damage from happening again. Besides this the manual offers some insightful general mechanical and boating knowledge.

This manual is a must for all those boaters that still have these famous motors, as it is the best trouble shooting and repair manual that has ever been published for them.

This is the third volume of Tony Winstanley's remarkable and challenging life as a seafarer. Each chapter conveys the true adventure of life at sea in forceful detail.

The fascinating characters that the writer meets are described in his own unique way. The reader quickly becomes familiar with their frequently funny, but often startling, personalities and eccentricities. This real life story is filled with excitement and humour, although sometimes tinged with sadness.

Winstanley arrived back in Canada in 1958 aboard the 'Empress of England'. He then proceeded to sail on an amazing variety of ships for the next 33 years. Some were splendid and luxurious - others dilapidated rust buckets.

A truly great read, these pages hold a splendid selection of exciting escapades from many parts of the world. They are brought vividly to life by their obvious authenticity and the writer's integrity.

Not only is the narrative clear and concise, without recourse to digression, it has the amateur builder in mind. By following the procedures laid down it will be possible for anyone with even the least talent on this subject to construct a boat from start to finish. For those who only wish to know how a boat is constructed, then this book is a must.

Today's combat submarine holds a crew of less than 200 men, equal to a company of infantry. Yet these few submariners can command a sea or destroy a civilization. Never has so much combat power been wielded by so few warriors. This concentration of power is made possible by innovative use of technologies, including rocketry, acoustics, hydrodynamics, nuclear power, advanced chemistry, unique materials and a host of others.

Unlike other 20th century military innovations - the tank, the airplane and nuclear explosives - the submarine remains shrouded in secrecy, a truly "silent service." This book surveys the state of submarine technology worldwide, and examines research advances that will shape the second century of submarines.
