When I watch ITU and Ironman triathlons on television and the Internet, I rarely see any black people, and never do I see a black triathlete pro or age group winner. And being a national champion swimmer and generally a competitive athlete, it bothers me. How can I or a ten-year-old black kid visualize being the champion if there’s never been a visual before? Well, I just can’t settle for that. So this year I’m on a quest to become the first ever TriBlackAlete to win a USAT age group national championship. And with a good Ironman performance in South Africa, maybe I can provide the missing “visual.” That would be something.

On and off the links, Bob has been a strong competitor and an even stronger friend to fellow aficionados of the game. He taught golf for beginners in grades 4 through 8 in Vigo County for five summers before he coached high school golf for 26 seasons, the past 24 at Terre Haute South where his boys finished second, third and fourth at the IHSAA State Finals and his girls claimed eighth in the 1988 finals. Bob’s students have gone on to display exceptional sportsmanship, win championships and secure positions as golf pros and competitive professionals around the country. As a result, in 1994, Bob was inducted into the Terre Haute Golf Association Hall of Fame. He is also in the Indiana Golf Coaches Hall of Fame. Bob’s competitive golf game was set in motion when he won the Terre Haute Junior title in 1949. He later played at Indiana State Teachers College, now Indiana State University (ISU), and was the No. 1 player for three seasons, winning three Indiana Collegiate Conference titles and two Little State Championships. He was named ISU’s Most Outstanding Athlete in 1954, the first golfer in the history of the institution to win the award. He won three Casey Opens, the Spaghetti Open, the Roundup of Champions and the 1988 City Seniors Championship. Bob teamed with Art Blakely to win the Terre Haute Four Ball title in 1963 and was medalist in the 1971 Terre Haute Golf Association Interclub Tournament. He has also served as president of the Rea Park Men’s Club, Hulman Links Men’s Club and the Terre Haute Golf Association.

By Elliott S. Barker
Beatty’s Cabin journeys back to an amazing time when the Pecos high country of northern New Mexico was still wild and free. George Beatty, an old-time prospector, built his two-room log cabin on a grassy flat, beside the upper Pecos River, an area Elliott Barker grew to love. Beatty’s cabin is the pivotal axis for Barker’s thrilling memoir of his experiences and rugged adventures, many happy, a few tragic. He gets his first inspiring glimpse of the remote Pecos high country on the very same adventuresome trip when he first explores Beatty’s old cabin and prospect holes. With the babble of the upper Pecos water and the whispers of the mountain breezes among the spruces, he begins chronicling his adventures, starting with his first wilderness pack trip in 1896 at the age of ten and continuing with the awe-inspiring glimpses of mountain meadows and rugged peaks. Elliott relates tales of grizzly bear hunts, capturing outlaws, and a perilous winter rescue of a bunch of snow-trapped horses, among others. The historical development of the Santa Fe National Forest and the Pecos Wilderness area, so dear to Barker’s heart, form the foundation for this unprecedented memoir of the beauty and the glory of wild New Mexico.

By Martin Letts
After nearly fifty years as MFH and huntsman of England’s College Valley Hunt, Martin Letts retired only when he could no longer follow his hounds through the steep rocky country in the northern hills of England. In his new memoir, Letts recalls how he bred and trained the formidable hounds that eagerly hunted this challenging countryside and would become the basis of numerous English and American packs. But Letts also recalls a host of passionate people with whom he’s spent many days in the hunting field, sometimes in their best moments and sometimes in moments they’d rather forget. C. Martin Wood, MFH of the Live Oak Hounds in Florida, writes an Introduction that sets the scene for the memories that follow. “This treatise is a great example of knowledge meeting pen and paper. It will stand the tests of time as a way for the ‘expert,’ as well as the novice, to get a grasp of the issues to be faced when building, developing, and hunting a cracking pack of foxhounds," writes Wood. Martin Letts’s Memories of My Life at the College Valley has been edited by John Strassburger, for twenty years the editor of The Chronicle of the Horse and now its Foxhunting editor.

The Missing Ones is a true account of the disappearance of Blanche and Russell Warren. The young hardworking couple disappeared, seemingly without a trace, while driving a 1927 Chevy sedan from Port Angeles, Washington, to their cabin in the nearby town of Forks. At the cabin, eagerly awaiting their arrival were their two young sons, age eleven and thirteen. An investigation by the Sheriff’s Department in 1929 failed to find the Warrens. However, evidence collected by investigators led them to believe they may have driven into Lake Crescent. The case was largely forgotten until 1954 when a local upstart scuba diving club stumbled upon the story. They passed the story on to Olympic National Park divers in April of 2001. This is the story of how the Warrens disappeared into mysterious Lake Crescent, what happened during the 1929 investigation, how the dive club found the story and what they did to help solve the case, and finally how the park rangers solved the case.
