By BOB ARNETT
On and off the links, Bob has been a strong competitor and an even stronger friend to fellow aficionados of the game. He taught golf for beginners in grades 4 through 8 in Vigo County for five summers before he coached high school golf for 26 seasons, the past 24 at Terre Haute South where his boys finished second, third and fourth at the IHSAA State Finals and his girls claimed eighth in the 1988 finals. Bob’s students have gone on to display exceptional sportsmanship, win championships and secure positions as golf pros and competitive professionals around the country. As a result, in 1994, Bob was inducted into the Terre Haute Golf Association Hall of Fame. He is also in the Indiana Golf Coaches Hall of Fame. Bob’s competitive golf game was set in motion when he won the Terre Haute Junior title in 1949. He later played at Indiana State Teachers College, now Indiana State University (ISU), and was the No. 1 player for three seasons, winning three Indiana Collegiate Conference titles and two Little State Championships. He was named ISU’s Most Outstanding Athlete in 1954, the first golfer in the history of the institution to win the award. He won three Casey Opens, the Spaghetti Open, the Roundup of Champions and the 1988 City Seniors Championship. Bob teamed with Art Blakely to win the Terre Haute Four Ball title in 1963 and was medalist in the 1971 Terre Haute Golf Association Interclub Tournament. He has also served as president of the Rea Park Men’s Club, Hulman Links Men’s Club and the Terre Haute Golf Association.

Playing better golf without practicing, isn't that every golfers dream? Does that sound too good to be true? It is not!

What people fail to realize is that golf is played as much with the mind as it is with the body. Having more fun and being better at playing golf, in large part, requires an improvement in how a person uses thier brain and chooses to think while playing golf. Unfortunately golfers have, for the most part, ignored use of their brain as a way to improve their games and to increase their enjoyment of golf.

For most golfers, improvement means purchasing the latest, greatest golf club or trying out a tip they read in a golf magazine or watched on television. Despite using technologically advanced golf clubs and balls and improving their swing technique, many golfers do not seem to be lowering their scores.

The concepts explained in this book are simple, extremely effective, easy to apply, and are the same ones that the best players in the world are using. Professional golfers have come to realize that at the PGA Tour level everyone has terrific physical skills. The difference between the players and the good players are the mental skills. Most golfers do not have the physical talent to be able to hit the ball like Tiger Woods or Annika Sorenstam, but everyone, absolutely, positively has the mental capacity to learn how to think like them!

Every golfer can benefit by learning more about how to think properly while playing golf. I believe that golfers have a huge untapped potential that is just waiting to be unlocked.

Apply the simply, common sense techniques explained in this book and you too can have more fun and play better golf!

Intrinsic Golf - It's Within You: How to Play Better Golf When You Don't Have Time to Practice or Take Lessons will help all golfers, beginners as well as seasoned players, discover that it's easier to find their own swing and play by feel than it is to learn and play with someone else's methods and mechanics.

Former Major LEague Pitcher and professional/college coach Bill Denehy was taught the underlying theory behind the basic swing exercises described and demonstrated in Intrinsic Golf by Baseball Hall of Famer Ted Williams. These exercises provide a simple method for golfers to find or rediscover the rhythmic, flowing swing motion that's within them. By using their own intrinsic swing, instead of today's modern mechanical hitting motion, golfers will come to realize that improvements in both distance and accuracy are derived from consistency, tempo and speed - not power. And since swinging the club is physically less taxing than hitting at the ball, golfers will discover that their new, relaxed swing will result in improved ball striking and lower scores - even when they don't have time to practice or take lessons.

Throughout the book, Bill utilizes various facts and notable quotes to validate his theory, including the following excerpt from a recent Golf Digest article by NBC Golf Analyst Johnny Miller: "We're living in an age of power in which distance is king. Young players are taught to just murder the ball, and their swings have become incredibly fast and violent. This is fine for world-class players with superb hand-eye coordination, but for the average golfer it often spells trouble since accuracy is every bit as important as distance. Something has been lost - a thing called "grace." The rhythmic, flowing type of swing that golfers used to envy and try to emulate has fallen by the wayside. It's too bad because the majority of golfers would play better if they practiced with a languid, flowing swing in mind. They would hit the ball more solidly, have better timing, and be more consistent."

We could not have stated the case for reading Intrinsic Golf any better. Learn how to find your own rhythmic swing in just two minutes a day. Intrinsic Golf -It's Within You!

Greetings new golfer! Welcome to the most frustrating, infuriating, intimidating yet greatest of sports. Beware that, in taking up golf, your self-esteem is about to suffer irreparable damage.

You have, no doubt, remarked, in scanning the myriad of available golf books, that the authors, all blessed with olympian reflexes and hand-eye coordination, first took up the sport before the age of ten. Insightfully, you have probably also concluded that there may be a communication gap between these venerated masters of the game and your own tired, ripened and athletically-challenged physique.

Happily, you have just found the holy grail of golf wisdom for beginners. This book is about taking up golf - from a beginner's perspective. Like yourself, the author is a mere mediocre mortal who took up the game in his mature middle years and whose only previous athletic renown was winning a hula hoop contest in a church basement.

There are two things to learn about golf - how to hit a ball and understanding the game. The former is best learned, not from a book, but on a range from a teaching pro. You must also learn about the game's culture, customs and conventions, which is what this book is all about.

Media Comments on Duffer’s Debut:

• “This is the … book that should be mandatory for all golfers to read before they are allowed on the course.” - Flagstick Golf Magazine
• “The book is… humorous and is written from a beginner’s standpoint…middle aged and senior golfers would particularly appreciate it.” – Myrtle Beach Golf News
• “…this golf book is a must-read…Great illustrations, a great gift, a great read…it might even turn you into a great golfer ” - Good Times Retirement Magazine
• “Ronberg…should be commended for his effort.” - Lorne Rubenstein, The Toronto Globe and Mail
• “If you’re thinking of taking up this sport, Ted Ronberg can save you some of the angst you experience.” – Lee-Anne Cusack, CJOH TV
• “Not just for beginners, Duffer’s Debut also has a wealth of valuable information for experienced golfers.”- Bob Durant – host of the Golf Report – AM 740 Radio, Toronto
• “This is the Holy Grail of golf wisdom for beginners” – Bob Sinclair - Eyelevel Golf Products

The author combines his care and concern for street children and his fondness for the game of golf, to bring out yet another in his series of "We Care" stories. Based loosely on real life characters and situations, his books have given us an insight into the plight of kids with nowhere to live, but on the streets; and no one to turn to, except each other.

His published work, The Saga of Alex and His Friends showed us what could happen to these street kids when there is no one around that cares. However, it also opened our eyes to the possibilities, when there are people who do care, and are willing to do something about it. "We Care" came about when these caring people got together and pooled their resources to provide shelter and care for homeless kids.

In this novel, which is a sequel to The Saga of Alex and His Friends, Mr. Warner brings in a number of real life characters who become involved in the "We Care" program.

This is where the game of golf gets worked into the story when a talented young pianist, who is also a championship golfer, becomes involved with the "We Care" home, and school for former homeless boys.

Readers will find a wealth of interesting information about golf, as well as an engrossing story in We Care About Golf.

Cliffhangers, tears, and heart-warming moments abound in Tom Warner's second published novel; We Care About Golf.

The Left Handers' Golf Manual addresses the principal obstacles which prevent you from making improvements in your golf game. Playing better golf is directly associated with the proper application of the fundamentals to all aspects of the golf game from tee to green. Emphasis is placed on not solely relying on new equipment to make the improvements you are looking for in your golf game. It's how you do at establishing a strong foundation of the fundamentals that will determine whether you are able to make significant improvements in the way you play. The manual takes the golfer through the fundamentals of establishing the proper grip, correct stance, balance, proper body pivot, ball position, aim and alignment. It describes in detail how to set up properly to execute a good golf shot from the tee to green. There are chapters on using the woods and irons, bunker play, putting, playing from different lies, establishing a good pre-shot routine and how to practice effectively. A chapter on exercises to improve flexibility and endurance is also included. One should not expect to read this manual and become a scratch golfer overnight. However, if the instructions in the manual are followed and time is devoted to properly practicing the fundamentals, I can guarantee there will be a definite improvement in your golf game. The end result will be a greater sense of satisfaction with your game each time you play.

By by Jonathan Barrett, Illustrated by Chris King, Cover Design or

Jonathan Barrett, a 39 year old amateur golfer, has written a book called 'Golf Swing Eureka' that reveals how he knocked 30 shots off his average round of golf when he discovered little known aspects of the professional golfers swing. The ones that made the most impact were those he discovered from his own study, not from conventional golf swing material.

He found that there was plenty of information available on 'how to swing the golf club' but little information on 'how the golf swing really works'. When he learnt, from his own studies, how the maximum club head speed is generated by the pro's he carried out a survey and found that only 1 in 5 golfers could identify this fact correctly. Another aspect he discovered was only known by 1% of golfers!

As his golf swing developed he began to record the aspects that made dramatic improvements to his game. Some of these, he later came to realise, have never previously been explicitly identified.

In his book 'Golf Swing Eureka!' he identifies what he has termed 'Eye-Openers' - these are key moments when his understanding of the golf swing dramatically impacted on his ability to swing the golf club effectively.

The writing of this book is not because I enjoy writing but because I could not conscientiously not write this book. Something kept prodding me. I have tried to escape writing it in many ways like finding other things to do and hoping the urgency would go away. The evidence of this book tells you I did not escape the imperative.

Another aspect of this book is grounded in conversations with friends and colleagues. For ten years now couples who were involved with the Institute of Cultural Affairs on one level or another have met at a Mountain Retreat in Conifer, Colorado to reflect on the las. year's journey of our lives. It has usually taken a day or more to get this done. We set out a tentative schedule for the rest of the week. Once the schedule is set and free time arranged "Bud" Ames and I would set out for the golf course two or three times during the week.

"Bud" is deeply involved in the Heifer International Project. He is a veternarian so he goes to different projects as a skilled enthusiast. I told him when and if this book gets written the proceeds will go to the Heifer International Project. So we played golf on behalf of the Heifer International Project.

Let us move on. Another friend and colleague of mine since seminary days is John Berger of Chico, California. During one visit with him and his wife, Viola, we went to a golf driving range with his son, James. As James and I were hitting golf balls and John, sitting on bench at the side, watching and observing, made the comment, "Don, you are in another zone when you swing the golf club. Thus, the title of the book, Another Zone: God and Golf.

After reflecting on other cultures and observing sports as it relates to our culture, I assert that golf is the American Tai Chi. For example, Tai Chi is about relating the mind, heart and body as a whole unit. A quote from "Tai Chi Chuan" by Douglas Lee states, "Tai Chi represents a fusion of spiritual culture with physical culture, spiritually it incorporates the Taost principle of non-doing with the principle of serenity. Physically it utilizes the principle of health based on the strengthening and relaxing of the whole human body."

He states there are three essential elements to Tai Chi; meditation, health and self defense. The practice of these involves the training of both mind and body.

Golf is the practice of bringing the body mind and spirit into one complete movement. As you read this book I hope that you come to the same conclusion. Golf is indeed the American Tai Chi and there is a relationship between God and golf.

First of all, Ely Callaway was a formidable leader, somewhat like a military general who provided a high profile, daring example for his lieutenants to emulate. He avoided micro managing his staff to afford them the opportunity to excel, but he was in charge, assuredly, he was in charge. The book illustrates his leadership skills from the days of his youth and onward through three totally different but successful careers in the textile industry, the art of wine making, and his greatest triumph in forging the largest golf equipment company in the world.

It is inevitable that the story concentrates on the Callaway Golf Company, since the firm exemplified the vision of a man dedicated to marshalling human and material assets to bring superior products to the market that consumers would clamor for. The reader will learn how Callaway creatively used marketing tools to satisfy consumers and retain brand name loyalty.

But the book is also the tale of a man with human flaws. Anecdotes sprinkled throughout the book illustrate Callaway’s laudable personal activities and occasions when human shortcomings led to missteps in his life.

Finally, the book has an international flavor. The reach of Callaway Golf Company spans the oceans, and reportage from overseas media sources has been extensive. Information from those sources has been included to disclose how Callaway Golf leadership has been viewed outside the USA.

Have you ever asked yourself these questions:

  • Why is it so hard for me to play golf?
  • Why does my brain seem to go blank at the top of my backswing?
  • Why can't I feel as though I KNOW where the ball is going?
  • I've taken the lessons and read the books, what's missing?
  • I understand what they're saying, so why can't I seem to improve?
  • Why can't I seem to do what the instructors are teaching me?
  • Why?

Can you play softball or baseball pretty good? How about tennis, or hockey? Then why can't you be just as good playing golf? It doesn't make sense, does it?

This book explores a whole new approach to the PURPOSE of the golf swing. It does not teach swing mechanics, but rather focuses on helping to change your perception of actually what happens during the golf swing.

There is no cure-all for the golf swing; there never will be. It's all in our heads. If we let our brain take over, we will be amazed at what we can do!

Keeping our minds focused on what it is that we're trying to do and not on how to do it, allows our brain to make the necessary changes to accomplish that task, automatically.

I'm not a pro, and never will be. This book is not perfect, not complete, and not the answer. But golf is beginning to be a lot more fun!
