I went to the library one day to find a book of Lincoln one-liners, such as: "You can fool all the people some of the time, and..." but I found no such book. I then reviewed the literature and found that Abraham Lincoln rarely stated one-liners. His stories were nearly almost always couched in an ample supply of background detail leading to savory climaxes. After this I thought to myself, "There ought to be a book equivalent to Lincoln one-liners." So I decided to write it myself.

The first section of Distilled Lincoln Anecdotes presents basic meanings of individual humorous tales from the life of Abraham Lincoln. The second section contains amusing anecdotes, observations from life, some curiosities, and a few poetic lines by the author.

This book is a compilation of sayings. Not old and revered sayings from historical characters, but rather ordinary people from all walks of life and nationalities. Its contents are the result of a self-conceived project, in which people were approached by the author during a twelve year period and were asked to create, by using their mental acumen and lifetime experience, an entirely new saying of their own.

The premise upon which the project was based was the following: Must a saying attain immortality only because it was uttered by a famous character? Isn't the ordinary human being capable of formulating truly quotable thoughts if sufficiently and properly motivated?

Utilizing as base of operations his home-city of Victoria, Canada the author began approaching totally unknown individuals from the world over and proposed the idea to them. People from different nationalities, occupations and age groups were asked to participate in the project in a voluntary way by submitting a thought, an insight, a perceived truth, which would have sufficient intellectual weight to be considered as a quotable saying that could help to enrich world culture.

The only condition being, their contribution had to be totally new and orginal.

During the duration of the project, the author received nearly a thousand replies, two hundred of which were chosen to appear in this book. Those chosen were selected by their ingenuity and overall appeal.

Concurrently, the author invested a considerable amount of effort trying to verify that the sayings received were not a case of plagiarism and were truly authentic.

The results speak for themselves and the author leaves on the hands of the readers the final word regarding the entertaining value of the book.

I began writing Golden Specks in October of 1999 and finished it one year later. I wanted to record the little bits of precious thoughts and combine it with some of my favourite photographs. When I was on page nineteen and ideas kept coming to be, I realized that I was going to commit to making this book come true.

I have searced for beauty and knowledge in all that I have ever lived. Most of these thoughts came to me as I walked through nature trails in Timmins, Ontario. It was my active form of meditation except the quiet place inside of me kept talking!

My desire to write came by necessity in my first book As I Am. With this book, my writing was like a secret gift that came to me, every single day.

The year 2000 showed that terrorism continues to pose a clear and present danger to the international community. Terrorism is becoming a strategy that has a long history, but one that took on a particularly deadly caste beginning in the 21th century. The leaders of some of the most dangerous terrorist groups to emerge in the past decade have headquarters or major offices in Afghanistan, and their associates threaten stability in many real and potential trouble spots around the globe - from Indonesia to the Balkans, Central Asia to the Persian Gulf, Western China to Somalia, and Western Europe to South Asia.

Terrorists attempt not only to sow panic but also to undermine confidence in the government and political leadership of their target country. Terrorism is therefore designed to have psychological effects that reach far beyond its impact on the immediate victims or object of an attack. Terrorists mean to frighten and thereby intimidate a wider audience, such as a rival ethnic or religious group, an entire country and its political leadership, or the international community as a whole.

All terrorist acts involve violence or "equally important" the threat of violence. These violent acts are committed by nongovernmental groups or individuals that is, by those who are neither part of nor officially serving in the military forces, law enforcement agencies, intelligence services, or other governmental agencies of an established nation-state.

Terrorism has occurred throughout history for a variety of reasons. It causes can be historical, cultural, political, social, psychological, economic, or religious, or any combination of these. Some countries have proven to be particularly susceptible to terrorism at certain times, as Italy and West Germany were during the 1970s. Terrorist violence escalated precipitously in those two countries for a decade before declining equally dramatically. Other countries, such as Canada and The Netherlands, have proven to be more resistant, and have experienced only a few isolated terrorist incidents.

In general, democratic countries have provided more fertile ground for terrorism because of the open nature of their societies. In such societies citizens have fundamental rights, civil liberties are legally protected, and government control and constant surveillance of its citizens and their activities is absent. By the same token, repressive societies, in which the government closely monitors citizens and restricts their speech and movement, have often provided more difficult environments for terrorists. But even police states have not been immune to terrorism, despite limiting civil liberties and forbidding free speech and rights of assembly. Examples include Russia under tsarist rule and the Communist-ruled Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, as well as the People's Republic of China, Myanmar, and Laos.

The author expressed it all through quotations which was compiled from public figures, authors, poets, scholars, experts, professionals, statements, and the common people, and collected from books, newspapers, news-weeklies, poems, speeches, oral conversations, etc from all part of the world in connecting with the content of this book since 1980.

By Prof. Hon. Randolph M. Howes M.D. Ph.D.
The mind is fortified by learning and the spirit is strengthened by doing. Combined, they become exponential.

During the compilation of Dr. Randolph Howes’ research books on oxygen metabolism, he recorded his random musings for both informative and entertainment purposes. Coffee Table Musings of the Da Vinci in Cowboy Boots represents a five year collection of his pithy prose and perspicacious aphorisms.

With sardonic humor akin to Ambrose Bierce, Howes’ intellectual capacity nevertheless ranks with the best in science and medicine today. He covers a plethora of subjects in the scientific world and in our everyday lives. Whether it’s about a “thermodynamic treasure trove of biochemical perplexities,” the frailty of human perfection, or Leo Tolstoy’s wisdom, Howes delivers a funny and thought-provoking read.

Take a minute to enjoy Howes’ unique brand of wit. These “sardonic nuggets” are like potato chips…you can’t consume just one!

Ralph Waldo Emerson has said, "Conversation is an art in which a man has all mankind for competitors." Within these covers is laid bare the wit, wisdom, concern and love of the Mexican people. These proverbs, sayings, idioms, and mischievous verses represent a way of looking at the world that is uniquely Mexicano. The love of life and fellowship that is so characteristic of Mexicans springs off the pages. Some of the sayings are tender and some are ribald, but they are all authentic. They take an everyday situation and frame it for a broader meaning that may be uproariously funny, surprisingly unique, or merely wise. If you decide to use these sayings so you can be more conversationally competitive, you will succeed. However, even if you just partake of them as a glorious fest of ideas, feelings, and behavior, you will indeed thrive.
