This book was originally written for all Bull Terrier owners, and lovers of the breed. It was written to show a different slant, on the approach to the Bull Terrier, its personality, and its problems. The aim is to show that there are other safe and effective ways of dealing with ailments, and behavioural problems, than just conventional medicine. But at the same time it is always clearly stated that this book has not been written to use in place of going to the vet. It has sound advice on behavioural problems, it also shows that sometimes the deeper understanding of this charming breed, the Bull Terrier, reveals that what was thought to be behavioural problems, even, at times, by dog behaviourists and vets, are sometimes only the idiosyncrasies of the breed.

It also has some very good nutritional advice, and briefly discusses the debate on vaccination. The book also covers most of the real Bull Terrier behavioural problems, and how to treat some of the ailments that this breed is prone to.

This book was written in hopes that people would gain a real insight into this very special breed, and to kill off the myth of the tough and stupid fighting dog that the Bull Terrier has been so unjustly labelled with. Also to show that in training, reward is always so much better than punishment, and gets REAL and lasting results.

Lastly, but certainly not least, this book has been written to raise money for the wonderful people who do stirling work in the foster and veterinary care, and eventually re-homing of all the unfortunate Bull Terriers who have fallen on hard times. This group of people call themselves Bullies in Need. A good deal of the proceeds of this book will fall in their capable hands.

Bullies In Need was started in March 2004. It was founded by two ladies called Ann and Jo after they had successfully been running a website called Bull Terriers UK for about two years. It became apparent to them that there were a lot of Bull Terriers who needed help in one way or another, whether they be found as strays or their owners wanted them rehomed for instance, and they wanted to do something constructive about it. They first started a quarterly magazine called the Bullie Run to help raise funds. With a small amount of money behind them they set about building a network of Bull Terrier loving volunteers up and down the country, most came from their website. Having willing and capable people available to assess dogs, transport dogs and homecheck every potential adopter enabled them to rescue and rehome dogs from Scotland right down to Cornwall. They have several foster homes available to them and also Carol and Dave Weston in Spalding very kindly board some of the BIN dogs and, like the fosterers, treat all the dogs as if they were their own, for which BIN is very very grateful. All BIN dogs go their new homes vaccinated, neutered and health checked.

Now over 18 months later Bullies In Needs have rehomed 60 dogs in total, all are doing well in their new homes and have had their lives transformed.

Everyone who works for BIN does so on a voluntary basis but their rewards are far greater than any wage....to see a sad lonely Bull Terrier, with no-one to care for them, placed in a new home with a loving forever family, and be happy for maybe the first time in its life, is all the reward the volunteers need.

Some of the proceeds of this book will go towards supporting BIN.

An ancient Buddhist proverb says, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." Sheryl never expected her master teacher to have four legs and a curly tail. Chelsea, a four-year-old Norwegian Elkhound, met Sheryl one month before her beloved uncle was hospitalized with symptoms of terminal cancer. Her devoted love comforted Sheryl; when the time was right, she led Sheryl to her spiritual path. They walked that path together for ten years, facilitating each other's growth and sharing a deep love that was a gift to both. Although Chelsea passed on in 2003, her service continues as she supports the people and animals in our world. She is still Sheryl's master teacher and her nearest angel. Nine Roses for Chelsea is the story of a love so strong it transcends death.

This is a true story about a remarkable Staffordshire bull terrier called Laurel. Laurel first came to live with me about seven years ago and this book not only goes through the happy times but also the not so happy. Although Laurel herself is not in the best of health - something I will always partly blame myself for - she never ceases to make people smile. She has helped me through some pretty traumatic times in her short lifetime and at the end of day a smile is never far away when Laurel is around. The book traces the early days, training sessions, rewards, responsibilities, laughter and sadly the all too frequent visits to the vet's.

Also, while writing this book, instances from my childhood re-emerged with certain things I had never discussed with anyone before now. The book also traces the closeness I feel towards my parents and my grandparents who now, sadly, are no longer with us.

Anybody who has, or who has ever 'owned' a pet will find so much they can relate to in this book and in these days where animal cruelty tragically appears to be on the increase it is refreshing to read that most humans really do care for animals. Also after reading this book I hope to paint a truer picture of the ` Staffie' and show just how sensitive this particular breed can be towards it's human friends. There was only one title I could give this book:

LAUREL - EVERYONE'S BEST FRIEND.

Shaping the Wolf Within Your Dog is a comparison study of wolf and dog behavior. It is also a comprehensive guide for living in harmony with dogs. We know dogs are genetically related to the wolf; and both exhibit identical instincts, behaviors, temperaments, and dispositions - and both abide to the law of nature that contends: for any animal grouping to survive, there must be social order and communication between its members. Knowing this, we should learn all we can about wolf behavior, and incorporate that knowledge with our dogs.

By learning how pack animals establish social order and communicate with one another, we can use this information to shape our dogs' natural instincts, without having to use food bribes or violence. When we communicate in our dogs' language, we will be able to communicate our leadership. The outcome will be predictable, for we will be using the same methods of an alpha wolf when he establishes and maintains social order with a pack of wolves. We will be shaping the same wolf instincts that are intact and engaged in each of our dogs.

Shaping the Wolf Within Your Dog illuminates:

  • The natural behavior of canines
  • The language of canines
  • How alphas lead their packs
  • How alphas discipline and show affection
  • The hierarchy of the wolf social order
  • The natural friendliness, loyalty, and devotion of pack members
  • How to pick the best pup from a litter
  • How to establish social order with pups
  • Basic obedience and off lead obedience
  • Family protection training

This book was written to help humans understand how important it is to bring lonely and homeless pets into their homes. Walk through any animal shelter and look at those dogs who are pleading for you to choose them. They are aware that they are not going to live if they are not helped.

This little story is about one dog that looked as if he had just given up, but a woman walked by his cage. He didn't jump up and beg to be taken home, like all the others were doing. With very sad brown eyes peering at the woman, he just lay there with a hopeless look. Probably many people had stopped and looked before, but he was big, and so skinny he almost didn't look well. Chances are no one wanted him. He also looked like a breed that some people fear...The German Shepherd Dog!

He was in luck. The woman wanted him. She thought to herself that if he were sick, who better to take care of him. She had taken care of sick German Shepherds for the past 14 years. So she paid the fee, signed the adoption papers, and made all the arrangements to pick him up the next day after he had been neutered.

As she was leaving, the man who was handling the dog thanked her and told her that the dog was going to be euthanized that night. She burst into tears. Her last beautiful German Shepherd Dog had died only six weeks before.

And so Jacob's story began. He wasn't sick, just a con artist. He wants everyone to know how to communicate with, love and care for, and laugh with a furry stranger.

Those things will bring more than happiness...and not to just the dog!

An Owner’s Guide to Raising Your Pet Protector Written by two dog trainers Michael “ Gypsy “ Stratten & Lori Berg

Every aspect of owning the dog is covered, from choosing your puppy to integrating it into your family, and what you should expect from the dog.

This guide is an all inclusive, innovative A-Z manual written from a perspective that no other dog trainers take.. The Best Bite is no Bite! In today’s lawsuit happy society this book is a necessary read promoting productive and responsible dog training & ownership.

It has been our experience that most dog owners truly just want and need a pet that will deter bad guys based on their appearance and how they act around the house. In fact most dog owners never take their dogs to compete in shows, and are not part of some para-military or hard core sport groups.

The relationship between man and dog is age old. Dogs do not need to be taught to chase and bite in order to protect. This book differentiates between the training of a police dog and a personal protection dog geared towards family and business.

This book will teach you how to develop your personal PET PROTECTOR.!

The trainers provide real life anecdotes, comprehensive training information and thought provoking essays.

A former Navy pilot recalls an incident from his younger days involving his first real pet, a dog named Buster. In later years he and his family acquire various other pets yet the author never allows himself to become attached to them. In time, he acquires a free weimaraner and that sets the stage for a future which ultimately includes three very diverse dogs of that same breed.
While the book is primarily about weimaraners, it is really about all dogs and their relationship with the human members of their "pack." The author and his wife undergo a series of challenges far beyond their early expectations and the results range from sad to hilarious. They begin with a single dog and add a second. The book follows them through puppy stage, the show ring, hunt tests and day-today life. As they finally reach a stable and predictable relationship with the two dogs, they add a third and the chaos begins.
There is a great deal of information and lessons learned presented throughout the book. Some methods worked and others failed miserably. The inevitable compromises reflect the impact that the dogs have on the author, his family and friends.
This book contains no inappropriate language and is a must for anyone who has ever owned a puppy or anticipates adding one to the family.

Written after retiring from the sanctuary, it is being published as a promise to a very special boxer dog 'Elsa' who was his savour in difficult times. Sadly 'Elsa' is now with the other doggies in the sky but hopefully by writing this others will see that animals and dogs especially can be mans/woman's best friend.

We as humans have responsibility to animals yet this book shows that in even a country supposedly full of animal lovers there are still cruelty and neglect. In the world as a whole it is even worse yet all most domestic animals want is companionship and shelter.

The author underwent a life-changing situation when in his early thirties. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer but fortunately for him he survived and now over the age of sixty-five seems as healthy as anyone. This change made him reassess 'life', what is it for? Being a businessman he continued in his small way and was successful for over thirty years but that in itself was not enough. As a result he and his former wife decided to help animals mainly domestic in some small way leading to the setting up of the animal sanctuary. The business aspect helped support this and later he advised others not so fortunate into going into business. When retiring from advising he had helped over 12,000 people from all walks of life and, many on the lowest rung of society into a new life by working through HRH Prince Charles charities and government-sponsored schemes.

Now mainly living in Thailand where there is also a dog problem far in excess of the UK he is trying with difficulty to help where he can.
