There are groups established and individuals practising this art, not just in India, but throughout the world. In the UK and the USA there has been a great surge in interest in this Indian tradition of reciting the Veda as an aid to meditation and also as a therapeutic practice using the vibrational effects of the ancient Sanskrit language. This book is an introduction to the art for beginners and also a handbook for those already practising. Integrating modern psychological insights with Christian biblical teaching, In God's Own Image is a useful tool to the individual or group seeking personal growth, as well as to a counsellor, spiritual director or growth facilitator assisting others in that all important journey of human growth. it proceeds in three main steps: first portraying the ideal of the personality as God meant it to be, then the reality of what we are that includes goodness and deformation, and finally exmining how we can reclaim the ideal, both for ourselves and for those we assist; whether individually or as groups. The material is arranged under three parts. Part I describes the ideal: What god meant us to be. Part II describes the reality: what we actually are with both our original beauty and our fallen nature. Part III describes what we can become, how we can move towards our original beauty. A fundamental attitude to have in the arduous struggle of human growth - whether this concerns one's own growth or one's duty in assisting the growth of others - involves three convictions: 1) Change is difficult. A realistic appraisal of this fact doe not lead to discouragement. On the contrary it leads to perseverance, to patience, endurance, courage, and acceptance of occasional failure - all factors that accompany genuine growth. It helps us avoid the pitfall of looking for quick tangible results. 2) Change is important. In fact conversion and growth are not just important, they are fundamental to a life worth living. Striving towards our ideal self is the most important thing in our lives. For that reason it is worth spending on it every ounce of strength in us. When we are convinced of this then we are motivated to work for it. 3) Change is Possible. It is possible to improve, to be converted and to grow. When we have struggled to overcome one difficulty or another for years without visible success, we may get into the belief that it is hopeless to think of the possibility of overcoming the diffficulties. But the good news about each one of us is that however much the beautiful image of God in us has been tarnished and disfigured, we have the possibility to have it restored to its original beauty.

Why do we do what we do? Isn’t everything we do, ultimately, to bring us happiness? Think about it. All our planning, all our actions, all our manipulations, all our accumulations, are so that we can just be happy. When we get what we want, really, how long does it last? Is there a way that we can be happy all the time? The drive to fulfill our desires, in practice, does not bring us lasting happiness; so, what can we do? There is one practice that is most essential in revealing the bliss of the Self—and that is meditation. This is the fundamental practice of mystics in all cultures that shows us the happiness that lies just behind the mind and shines its joyous radiance when the mind is at peace. If we will just spend some time every day in this sublime equanimity, we will get everything. The traditional path to the inner yoga of happiness, which is taught in yoga philosophy (Advaita Vedanta), is simply the practice of meditation. In this practice, we distill the inner caprice of thought down to simple stillness. As we get longer stretches of this stillness, we become acquainted with the fullness of our essential being. In this fullness arises spontaneous joy, contentment, and wisdom. This is the happiness that is always there in every moment. This book is a journal of clues along the way in the pursuit of enduring inner happiness, independent of outer circumstances. Also available from this author: Yoga Sutras: The Means to Liberation

When Moses received the 10 commandments from God written on the tablets of stone, he also received details on how to construct a temple like structure called the tabernacle. Housing the Ark of the Covenant and the presence of God, the tabernacle became the centre for spiritual activity among the 12 tribes of Israel while wandering in the wilderness. The temple built by King Solomon and many later churches and cathedrals were built according to the same pattern. As well, many of the articles and rituals from the modern Christian church can trace their origins back to the tabernacle. The New Testament idea that our bodies are the temple of God is at the very heart of this book, The Tabernacle as a Model for Meditation. Among the many thousands of readings given by American psychic Edgar Cayce are found numerous references to the tabernacle as a pattern for the human body. Written symbolically into the structure and articles of the tabernacle is found a parallel to the body of man. The duties and functions of the priests are symbolic of inner physiological, psychological and spiritual processes. The means to worship and enter into this holy structure (our own bodies) is through the practice of meditation. Some meditation techniques based on the Edgar Cayce readings are discussed. In exploring the ancient Chinese medical and meditation texts, we find that they too recognize a tabernacle like structure in the energy patterns of the body. While the tabernacle sat in the desert interacting with the 12 tribes, the Chinese structure is in the energy body and interacts with 12 meridians. It seems that even in other cultures the body is indeed the temple of God.
