Because of some neighbors "from hell" the Storms decided to completely change their lifestyle, sell their condo, downsize and become full-timers. This book tells the story of their transition from living in a home that never moved (unless there was an earthquake) to living in a home that rarely stops moving; how they overcame the "stuff syndrome"; how they bartered for their rent; and how they took the "lemons" their nasty neighbors tried giving them and made "lemonade"... and never looked back. If the reader has been thinking about living full time in their recreational vehicle or volunteering at a campground as a host this book will explain the process as the Storms lived through it. The Storms had both good and bad experiences as hosts and this book explains in detail some of those experiences Ð both the good and the bad.

This narrative of parallel human and avian lives moves through whimsy and tragedy to thoughtful observation backed by documented research. In a vividly told memoir, the author uses the unexpected introduction into her life of an aware and intelligent possessor of a "bird brain" to suggest how more humane behavior toward all animals can further the cause of a more peaceful planet.

The book opens in the humorous vein often associated with large talking birds. Humor gives way as Leigh Farris shares her deepening understanding of the feelings and mentality of another species. Yet this true story, written for adults -- young, old, or in-between -- isn't only about birds and other animals. Concern for the fate of Max (who is later renamed for good reason!), is linked to the fate of a much-decorated Air Force officer whose experiences in Vietnam have determined his fate as well as that of his avian protege. From the inescapable legacy of twentieth-century wars inherited by all human beings, we realize ever more fully the unbreakable ties that link together all creatures and events on earth.

New ways of thinking are awakened by the unexpected encounter with a lively cockatoo, a species that has been called "flying primates." A disarmingly complex personality is unveiled as an understanding of Max's avian perceptions gradually develops through trial and error. The author strikes a rich vein of supporting evidence for crediting such a seemingly insignificant creature with deeper awareness as well as what is commonly called intelligence. A Bird Shall Carry the Voice reveals the illogic of viewing some animals as lovable individuals and others simply as factory-produced food or mechancal objects for experimentation. We are led to a realm of heightened awareness by the often ignored commonalities shared with all species, in particular by "that which hath wings."

As the lives of this story's characters unfold, from the Far East to California, Middle America, the Deep South, and finally Hawaii, the author suggests less egocentrical human attitudes that must prevail in order to ensure a sustainable Earth and better life for all beings.

The two most terrifying forest fires in North American history defied science. In the Great Peshtigo Fire of 1871, a powerful wind carried a house bodily in the air, and it was not on fire when it left the ground. Then, the house burst into flames. This inferno actually leaped 15 miles across Green Bay. Like Peshtigo, the Great Hinckley Fire of 1894 came from many surprising directions. One of the fire's tongues shot up from the ground and burned into a woman's skeleton. A fiery mass engulfed a home and shed, jumped over several buildings, and bounced into a sawmill, taking its whole blazing structure into the air. Since both infernos are strikingly similar, each fire is fully detailed in The Devouring Rages of Fire.

Author Clark C. Peterson assembled survivors' experiences to create exceptionally picturesque descriptions of both infernos. Rick Selvin of the Camden New Jersey Post insisted, "I've never seen a better candidate for a movie script!" Metromedia Producers in Hollywood claimed that they've "never heard of a more harrowing disaster!"

Linda Garrett, who holds a Master's degree in Journalism, read Peterson's book and felt as if she went through the infernos. He "had me mesmerized. I could not put the book down and read it...in one night. His descriptions made me feel like I was right in the middle of the destruction. Clark's knowledge and investigative nature make him a great writer. He takes the time to research his topic, gather useful information and write in such a manner that keeps his readers turning pages." Garrett recommends Peterson's books be required reading for journalism students. She also insists that Clark Peterson has "one of the most descriptive writing styles of any author I have ever had the pleasure of reading."

Come if you dare for a quiet walk in Western Canada's lively woods. Twenty-seven real life short-stories will bring you into the beautiful rural and remote wilds of British Columbia, Yukon and Alberta. As you climb rugged mountainsides and explore forested valleys.

Close and energizing bears, cougars, moose, wolverines, fox, beavers, owls and many other wild animals large and little. Such experiences have taught him much-valued lesions, a positive never-ending appreciation and definite respect for Nature's infinite living expressions.

When one is out alone and with benign intent in the wilds of Nature, uncommon or intimate experiences sometimes come: effecting unexpected deep psychological, positive emotional and even inner spiritual change. Thus Nature can be a great teacher... speaking to humanity in multifarious nonconceptual ways. Nature is not necessarily an enemy to be feared, defeated or destroyed but is instead a realm for living, learning, appreciating and caring.

Comprehensive notes give tips on how you can hike or camp safely and cleanly. Jargon and terminology are defined and a variety of relevant information included. Elaborations are made on various subjects mentioned in the book: animal behaviour, ecology, politics, economics, society, philosophy, human mind and the power of Nature. The author's views are derived from a combination of direct experience, observation and reason.

This book is written from the pages of the diary kept by the author on her walk, the diary being written every night or perhaps the next day while all the experiences were fresh in her mind. You can read it and "live the walk" as you do so. Following the spring north meant enjoying the sight of each new spring flower and sight or sound of birds as the journey continued northward through ever changing landscape. Although a stress fracture to the neck of the femur delayed the completion of the walk until the following spring, this did not seem to break the continuous nature of the journey; "It's still there - Keep smiling!" kept her looking forward to the next stage of the walk. She met some delightful people on the walk, enjoyed the company of some good friends for parts of it and enjoyed the "bliss of solitude" for much of it, appreciating being alone in wild places but not lonely. Having walked and enjoyed the scenery from the south of Cornwall to the north of Scotland, she was sorry to finish.

When Marcia married Jesse Martin and moved to a pond front home in a private setting, it was, for the nature lovers, a dream come true. The yard was replete with wildlife. Foxes, deer, coyotes, racoons and waterfowl were frequent visitors, but it was one Canada Goose that Marcia set her affection on, and he likewise seemed to 'adopt' her.

Bandy is the true story of a unique relationship between a woman and a wildling, who, by some unfortunate tragedy, loses his right foot and part of his leg. His lifetime mate, Bindy, decides he's only half a goose and takes up with his best friend, a goose who was banded with him on the same day ten years prior. Bandy, though social by nature, becomes a loner by fate. Then, as if he hasn't suffered enough, he has a run-in with monofilament fishing line that almost costs him his life. After a month in rehab, he is returned to Griffith's Pond, only to disappear with the rest of the geese after eight days. Though it is his normal departure time at the end of the summer molt, Marcia has mixed feelings about his disappearance. She's pleased he feels like a part of his gaggle, but she's climbing the walls worrying about his welfare. After all, she hadn't even seen him fly yet.

There is an element of the supernatural in this true story, from Marcia's premonition about Bandy's brush with death, to the amazing answer to her prayer to find him two months after he's left. It will be difficult to doubt the power of prayer and the reaches of Divine care after reading Bandy. Encountering this little survivor will bring you encouragement in a troubled world, and perhaps you will be able to face your own set of circumstances with renewed hope. It is a must-read for every nature lover and anyone who has problems; I guess that includes us all. For more information about Bandy please visit www.bandythegoose.com.

This story is about my cats and seeing a world through their eyes. I thank "my boys" for unknowingly, through their actions, inspiring me to write this book about them. The story introduces all the members of The Boys Club, and their mission to bring in two orphaned strays, as new members of the club.

Sammy and Tiny Tim are in search of a family to belong to and ask members of an exclusive club how to join. The strays live in the garage, while the club members live in the clubhouse with two humans, called Mommy and Daddy. Winter is coming, and the only thing holding them back is...they do not trust humans.

Can the club members convince the strays that not all humans are bad? Will Sammy and Tim overcome their fears and choose a life with humans or will they remain orphans without a family to call their own?

The Lewis and Clark gang are back on their old stomping grounds! They live again to explore the Missouri River, Gates of the Mountains, Three Forks, Lemhi Pass, Lost Trail Pass, Lolo Trail, Clearwater River, Fort Clatsop and Fort Mandan. Follow this cartoon story in 35 weekly installments, and learn about some of the best places to canoe and hike on the Lewis and Clark Trail. Many places still resemble the beautiful wild landscape that Lewis and Clark described in their journals nearly 200 years ago.

Review

from American Rivers magazine, Spring 2002

Dean Norman's interest int the adventures of Lewis and Clark stems from a canoe trip he took on the Missouri River in Montana more than 30 years ago. A former cartoonist for Hallmark Cards and American Greetings, Norman has recently combined his interest in the explorers' historic expedition with his artistic talent in a pair of books that recreate the voyage of Lewis and Clark through hand-drawn comics.

Norman's latest book, On the Lewis and Clark Trail - Wally's Woods Vol. 2, is a modern-day journey with Meriwether Lewis and William Clark reincarnated as animals (a Canada goose and beaver, respectively). As the pair retraces their footsteps, they befriend numerous creatures, animal and human alike, just as the explorers did nearly 200 years ago. Norman's mix of history and humor is impeccable. He includes extremely specific details, demonstrating he's a true Lewis and Clark enthusiast. At the same time, Norman keeps the story fun and interesting for all readers, no matter how familiar they may be with the expedition. He even makes a point of commenting on the changes the Lewis and Clark trail has endured over the years.

The book also features a detailed history of the Plains Indians by Dakota Goodhouse, a historian and student who is also a native of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in Fort Yates, N.D.

Norman's ties to Lewis and Clark are not limited to his books. In the early 1970s, he worked on a Lewis and Clark television drama that was to have cast Fess Parker, who portrayed Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone in the 1950s. The show, however, never came to fruition as its would-be producer died. Norman has also traveled much of the Lewis and Clark trail in Montana and Idaho and studied ecology at University of Missouri-Kansas City and University of North Dakota. Norman currently resides in Cleveland.

Once, the north coast of British Columbia was dotted with cannery villages. Now only a few plants remain. In Gladys Young Blyth's new history of the northern salmon canning industry, many remarkable photographs- of the canneries, the fish boats, the workers- provide glimpses of by gone days in an industry that has been of vital significance to the development of the province. For each of the thirty-eight canneries on the Nass and Skeena Rivers the author gives a short history, the location, and a physical description of the plant. Her chronology of early- day to present methods of fishing and processing provides the reader with a clear understanding of how the industry functioned. Who were the cannery workers? How did they live in those isolated locations on the B.C. north coast? These and other questions are answered in this fascinating pictorial history.

Retail giants and other agents of urban sprawl have devastated small town character and have helped produce a new wave of interest in participatory planning. Using a compelling and dramatic local case-study, the book analyzes the politics of land-use planning at the end of the twentieth century and provides a timely practical and theoretical vehicle through which scholars, community activists and policymakers alike can understand the actual terrain and terms of contestation. In examining the step-by-step process of environmental impact assessment in a local context, the authors realistically assess as well the obstacles to meaningful participatory democracy within structures established by the logic of the present liberal capitalist order.

"Megamall on the Hudson details the drama of environmental and land-use politics in a case study that pitted commercial 'big box' developers against community activists and environmentalists. The authors weave together legal and political analysis, theory and practice, from an insider's perspective that illuminates the interplay of community organizing and development pressures, state environmental policies and legal tactics, media coverage and electoral politics, persistance and personality too. Students of environmental planning, land-use development, and democratic politics more generally will find the book richly rewarding for years to come." John Forester, Professor of City and Regional Planning, Cornell University and author of The Deliberative Practitioner: Encouraging Participatory Processes and Planning in the Face of Power

"This is a Gothic tale of political intrigue: of whisperings, picket lines, and small town Machiavellians. Here the good old boy's network meets the dueling experts, the suited hucksters, and the world's largest retail corporation. There are two things you should never watch being made: sausage and legislation. Now add one more: land use decisions. Beneath the veneer of public process are the capricious circumstances of impenetrable, quirky judgments." Al Norman, editor of the Sprawl-Busters Alert newsletter and web site and author of Slam-Dunking Wal-Mart! How You Can Stop Superstore Sprawl in Your Home Town
