This narrative of parallel human and avian lives moves through whimsy and tragedy to thoughtful observation backed by documented research. In a vividly told memoir, the author uses the unexpected introduction into her life of an aware and intelligent possessor of a "bird brain" to suggest how more humane behavior toward all animals can further the cause of a more peaceful planet.

The book opens in the humorous vein often associated with large talking birds. Humor gives way as Leigh Farris shares her deepening understanding of the feelings and mentality of another species. Yet this true story, written for adults -- young, old, or in-between -- isn't only about birds and other animals. Concern for the fate of Max (who is later renamed for good reason!), is linked to the fate of a much-decorated Air Force officer whose experiences in Vietnam have determined his fate as well as that of his avian protege. From the inescapable legacy of twentieth-century wars inherited by all human beings, we realize ever more fully the unbreakable ties that link together all creatures and events on earth.

New ways of thinking are awakened by the unexpected encounter with a lively cockatoo, a species that has been called "flying primates." A disarmingly complex personality is unveiled as an understanding of Max's avian perceptions gradually develops through trial and error. The author strikes a rich vein of supporting evidence for crediting such a seemingly insignificant creature with deeper awareness as well as what is commonly called intelligence. A Bird Shall Carry the Voice reveals the illogic of viewing some animals as lovable individuals and others simply as factory-produced food or mechancal objects for experimentation. We are led to a realm of heightened awareness by the often ignored commonalities shared with all species, in particular by "that which hath wings."

As the lives of this story's characters unfold, from the Far East to California, Middle America, the Deep South, and finally Hawaii, the author suggests less egocentrical human attitudes that must prevail in order to ensure a sustainable Earth and better life for all beings.

An injured fledgling crow literally dropped into our lives. What to do? For it being a protected species was cause for concern. While pondering the responsibility and effort to raise it, son Tim asked the simple yet pointed question “What do you have to do anyway?” He was right and the answer will be found in this book that really just happened because of the crow, Shadow. As we reared him to adulthood and eventual return to the wild, our neighbor Mike proclaimed it: The Summer of Shadow.

Although much has been written about birdwatching in Doñana, there has never been a fully comprehensive and in-depth book that has given visiting birders to the region the opportunity to explore the endless possibilities that exist here. The main purpose of this book is to make information available and to guide you to some of the finest and most productive birding sites in Europe. All of the information contained herein is based on my extensive knowledge and experience, gained after five years of living and working as an independent bird tour guide in this region, conducting hundreds of tours and guiding thousands of birders, with my own birding company "Doñana Bird Tours". I believe that my intimate knowledge of the region, the birds, their migration patterns, their breeding grounds and their feeding habits, together with t'he effects of local climatic condition changes, makes me suitably qualified to write the most comprehensive guide book to this region.

This book gives detailed information on almost 50 sites within the Doñana region, and although a few of these have been mentioned in other publications, some are new and are seldom found by visitores to the area. The precise directions and descriptions contained within will lead you into the heart of this birdwatching wonderland and open up a treasure chest of previously un-recorded sites and areas, where geese, ducks, flamingos, cranes, ibis, herons, egrets and waders gather to feed, roost and breed in their thousands. You will also find areas wth high raptor densities and the breeding grounds of some of Europe's scarcest and most endangered species, such as the Red-knobbed Coot, the Marbled Duck and the Spanish Imperial Eagle. You will be able to discover for yourself the sites that I refer to as "the hidden Doñana".

This is a true story of the seven months I spent with a fledgling blue jay that fell into my life. As human parents the children and I provided him with food and love. In return we were rewarded with the jay's devotion as well as his incredible feats. His final choice was the outside world.

Included in the book are 18 photographs that document some of the jay's antics. The cover photograph was taken after his extraordinary flight to another town.

p> Hawkwatch, North Cotswolds To Coasts 1988-2006, documents one man's collection of field notes and observations of colleagues on birds of prey occuring in rural middle England. The recording area covers mainly southeast Worcestershire, north Gloucestershire and district of Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire. Notes on raptors occuring in other pasrts of the UK are included as theu are often relevant to circumstances in the bird world that is the Author's local recording area. This is particularly important for anticipating the arrival of migrants when incoming birds are first noted at coastal watchpoints.

As raptors are great wanderers by natures, the Author includes in his observations from parts of southern England and Wales particularly as birds such as Red Kites for instance, reintroduced to carious parts of the UK, often turn up in the Cotswolds and Wales, recognized by identification tags fitted to their wings as nestlings.

Hawkwatch gives an insight into the fortunes of regional residents and rare visitors to the Author's patch, a valuable reference for researchers. There are plenty of tips for birdwatchers looking to improve their field craft conveyed through a portrayal of actual events, often with graphic details.

Illustrations are the Author's own. He is a self-taugh artist who strives to represent his subjects as realistically as possible.

Every Year around May, the mother hummingbird comes back to rebuild the “old home place.” It’s a wonder, as she has been gone a year. She has traveled thousands of miles, and always knows how to find her way back to the same nest. She tenderly places each piece of material where it should be in rebuilding the nest. This miracle takes place just outside my window where I have taken the photos from. It is amazing to watch the progression from the time she lays her eggs to the hatching of her babies. She cares for them through all kinds of weather, always protecting them. I love to watch her teach them to fly and to see them discover the world for the first time. It is a joy for me, when they have learned to care for themselves They stay for the summer in St. George, UT, and I make sure they have plenty of flowers planted. I hang several feeders of nectar for them. The “hummers” themselves are entertaining, beautiful and sometimes humorous. It is sad to see them leave on their long journey to Mexico and South America, in the fall, but I know I’ll see them again in the spring.

I have learned much about life, in taking the time to observe these tiny little creatures. They know just what to do by instinct. I wish it could be that simple for us humans. Perhaps we can take a lesson from all this.

I have been blessed to experience this miracle of the hummingbird returning and rebuilding the same nest for the past 3 years. My hope is that the children who experience this book will learn to love nature, and that they will understand how we as parents love, protect and teach them just as Momma Bird did.
