By C. Ray Greek, M.D.

Drs. Greek have written 2 books on why using animals as models for humans is not the best way to conduct medical research and drug testing. During their lectures and debates, the most commonly asked question was, "Well. What will we use if we don't use animals?" What Will We Do If We Don't Experiment On Animals? Medical Research for the Twenty-first Century is the answer to that question. Drs. Greek explain briefly why one species cannot predict drug response for another and describe what research and testing methods should be used today instead of animals. They also describe where our biomedical research dollars should be spent if we are to have cures for cancer, AIDS, and Alzheimer's. This book will appeal to science-trained and general audiences, animal lovers and science readers, public policy analysts, students, patients and patient support groups, and government watchdog groups. What Will We Do If We Don't Experiment On Animals? Medical Research for the Twenty-first Century takes medical research out of the nineteenth and into the 21st century.

After leading a regional office in Africa that studied ticks and tick-borne diseases, Rupert Pegram received a call in 1994 that changed his life. His higher ups wanted him to lead a new program in the Caribbean. The Caribbean Amblyomma Program, known as the CAP, sought to eliminate the Amblyomma tick from the Caribbean region. The stakes were high because ticks transmit terrible diseases. Today, the tropical pest introduced from Africa threatens to invade large areas of the south and central parts of North America. By learning about the progress, setbacks, political and financial constraints, and final heartbreak of failure in the Caribbean, the rest of world can discover how to fight the growing problem. Learn why the CAP program failed and how the Caribbean farmers who were let down by the program suffered. This history and analysis conveys the need to re-establish vigorous research to eradicate tick-borne illnesses. Ticks are invading the larger world, and there are serious implications. They found much of their strength during Thirteen Years of Hell in Paradise.

Join the extraordinary ‘walkabout’ of a zoologist/veterinarian whose attentions are turned to some of the most pressing humanitarian and conservation issues of our time. As a blend of adventure travelogue, veterinary anecdote and stateof-the-planet wake-up call, this unique ‘ambassadorship’ towards such causes provides an inimitably fresh take in contemporary journalism. The narrative is beautifully complemented with pencil drawings and capture-themoment photographs.

Besides bringing to light what it means to work in such an involved manner with people and their animals, the very essence of such work has allowed the author to look unobtrusively at the changing ways in which Humanity now relates to Nature. Whilst initially intended as a celebration of the Earth’s biodiversity and of its kaleidoscope of human cultures, the leading motivation for putting pen to paper has been the dawning realization of how imminently we stand to lose most of this richness.

Showcasing a bewilderingly varied array of worldly experiences, the resulting despatches take the reader on an emotional ‘rollercoaster’ of a journey – particularly sobering and poignant one moment, enlightening and awe-inspiring the next. Not only does the journey encourage us to identify closely with the natural world once again, but it also prompts us to question what our quality of life will be like in a world that is becoming increasingly barren.

Dr. Raymond Earnshaw, commonly known as Ernie, became a veterinary surgeon after five years attendance at the Veterinary College of Ireland located in Dublin. His story recounts many amusing events of this experience. He later joined a large practice in Reading, England. The work was mainly country and farm work for four years, after which he set up his own office in Wiltshire. His interesting cases are not gruesome and are told in a humorous and informative way. At age 33 he left U.K. for America then took a prolonged holiday which included deep sea fishing, farming, resort employment and finally touring across the U.S. and meeting old friends and other veterinarians. This culminated in a visit to Ontario where one of his previous nurses, June Wallis flew out to MacDonald's Corners. They were married in 1954.

Next it was across the continent by car to reach Sardis in B.C. and stay with Uncle Fred, who had emigrated from Ireland in 1922.

After passing local examinations he set up practice in Penticton where the now growing family stayed for nine years. He tells many amusing anecdotes about the people and his experiences in the Okanagan.

The next move was to North Vancouver where he settled into small animal practice which grew to two main hospitals and an out-patient clinic. He retired in 1989 and now resides in Ladner, B.C. with his second wife, Marilyn.
