Most often the stories about the Kwakiutl or the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations are written by anthropologists or research students. This book is written by a First Nations person who is a member of the ’Namgis tribe of the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations. The Path of Our Ancestors is the story of the first present-day hike across an ancient trail used by First Nations people and their trading partners from the West Coast of Vancouver Island in the territories of the Nuchanuulth people. Traditionally, people from the ‘Namgis First Nation traded the highly coveted eulachon oil for such items as sea otter pelts. This is why the trail is called the Grease Trail or T̕łiʼna T̕a̱xsola in our kwak̕wala language. The trail starts on the east side of northern Vancouver Island in the territory of the ’Namgis people. Included in this story is the period during the great flood and shortly after when the flood receded and enabled U’małame’ to begin exploring his territory again. The magical myths have enticed the four brothers to retrace the path of their ancestors and reopen the Grease Trail for limited guided hikes. Information about the hikes is available by contacting the U’mista Cultural Centre at 250-974-5403 or 800-690-8222 or by email to info@umista.ca

The Snuffly Dog is a children's picture book with a rhyming story. It is aimed at pre-school aged children primarily, but can be enjoyed by children of all ages. It tells the story of a day in the life of the Snuffly Dog, a friendly dog who appears to do nothing but sleep on the porch all day. However, when the Snuffly Dog hears any kind of music, up he jumps to dance and twirl like a true disco-dancer! When the music fades, back onto the porch he goes and flops down as if he'd never moved. The illustrations are loose and dynamic, with plenty of humour and vibrancy, and the text has an easy rhythm with plenty of scope for giggles along the way. This is an ideal book to be read to a young child at bedtime as the pictures are friendly and the story is easy and identifiable as a child will often see his or her pet as something other than what it appears. Because the story is about something we see everyday, but with a twist, it takes a child's imagination off on a journey they find so easy to accept. The Snuffly Dog will make both adults and children smile and will be a favourite for years to come.

The “Little Ukers” Method Books The “Little Ukers” method books use a sequential, step-by-step approach to introducing young students to the world of the ukulele. Available in both “D” and “C” tunings, the books use imagery and activities to teach students music reading and ukulele skills. “Little Ukers” is ideally suited for your young beginner ukulele classes. Level 2 introduces students to scales, chords, note reading, rhythms, basic strumming patterns, ear training, simple melodies, and the basics of solo playing. Little Ukers: Level 2, D Tuning is the second book in the Little Ukers Ukulele Method Series. It is a continuation of the comprehensive step-by-step approach to teaching music reading skills and techniques for playing the ukulele. It is designed to be used in a classroom or with a small group of students. The book uses imagery, activities, and an innovative approach to teaching students how to play the ukulele. It also covers the basics of ear training, strumming skills, note reading, music theory, and playing simple melodies. The “Little Ukers” program is a division of the Island Ukuleles Society based in Victoria, British Columbia. The program was piloted by Island Ukuleles Society in the winter of 2005 as a programming initiative to involve younger students in playing the ukulele. Developed by Melissa Sequeira, the program ran once a week for twelve weeks with four performances concluding the session. The “Little Ukers” pilot program, along with the new method book, was an overwhelming success! It is now offered as a regular program of the Island Ukuleles Society, and currently runs at two locations in Victoria, British Columbia with high enrollment.

Even as early as in the womb, a child can be influenced by music. When the child then enters the world, the parents, with the guidance of the holy spirit, can draw this peace through music. What better time than Christmas to show God's gift of peace?! We need to close our eyes and whisper a word of prayer. We need to ask that men on earth will listen and hope that they will care. Let's care for the children on the night of Jesus' birth. Let's work a little harder for peace upon the earth. We need to raise our eyes this Christmas night and shout a word of prayer. Ask that men will heed the words that the angels share. Take care of little children, let them grow to their full worth so they may learn and grow and work, for peace upon the earth. Come with us and share with us the joy and peace of Christmas night!
