Seventy million years ago there was explosive volcanic activity in the Mountains near Santa Cruz Valley. Thirty million years ago the volcanoes burst forth again to create sheets of black lava. Only the ancestors of the present day animals witnessed this spectacular event.

Scientists know that Paddy the Packrat is a descendant of the packrats that fearfully watched the exploding volcanoes.

The main characters of his historical story about southern Arizona are Sancho and Carlos- 300 pound bighorn sheep. They watched children who moved into their valley to work and play. As people moved in, some of the animals moved to the mountains in the surrounding valley. But Paddy the Packrat stayed to build his nest of 'junk': cacti, twigs and shiny objects.

Ice Age people came from Siberia with their wooly mammoths. Indians from Mexico arrived with corn seeds to plant. Father Kino brought the "rock horses" and an idea of a Mission from Spain. Chinese people came from the California gold fields to work on the railroad. The Santa Cruz Valley was fertile, protected by mountains with year round flowing water and food for the animals and people.

This is a story about the life of the animals, plants and children who came to the Valley before 1900. Part of the story is told in rhymes. Children can colour the pictures and search for Sancho, Carlos or Paddy in the illustrations. Historical dates, maps, photos and illustrations tell the story of the Santa Cruz Valley in the Southern Arizona Valley.

This handbook for young African Americans is intended to give them a feeling of self-worth by chronicling many of the contributions of African Americans to American history and to the American way of life in an easy-to-read format. The history of blacks in America has been badly distorted by the motion picture industry and textbooks. Newspapers generally print most of the bad news about blacks and often under-report positive news. This negative information adds to the anger that many young blacks harbor due to their economic plight, and feeds the feeling of hopelessness that they perceive as their future. This book lets them know that they deserve more, based upon their forefathersÕ contributions to America in war and peace and their inherent ability. It then attempts to guide them into a better economic way of life through understandable steps that are attainable. It stresses education as a basic tool for advancement as well as a reparations goal. It then goes through economic steps that can start to decrease the un-American economic gap that should not exist. Its main theme is that they are the progeny of forefathers who have accomplished a great deal, and they owe it to their forefathers to live up to that heritage.

Playmation with Alexander and Benjamin was created in 2000 as a "homemade" Christmas gift for two boys named Alexander and Benjamin. Since then, "this gift" has turned into a reality and is accomplishing what its original creation intended it to be: FUN! Playmation with Alexander and Benjamin is a historical fiction book for children, that is separate, from all others...because Alex and Ben (and the reader) actually ask interesting questions as they journey along on their time traveling adventures. Historical characters give Alexander and Ben answers to their questions. These questions are a springboard for children and their parents to inspire discussions about historical figures and historical events that have impacted the present day.

Some may remember it well. Shortly before 1:00 p.m. on May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down a unanimous decision in the case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, declaring that segregated schools did not provide "equal protection for all." This decision riveted throughout the nation as the Court struck at the heart of all legalized segregation. Although neither schools nor other public facilities immediately became integrated, this court case was a significant milestone on the road toward equality and justice for all people.

But it's the children and their families' voices that are often left out as more and more groups begin to formally commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of this landmark decision.

The children's book, The WAY that it WAS is NOT the way it HAS to be, written by Dr. Thomas I Scelza, presents this story in a reader and user friendly, accurate, pictorial format.

It is our desire that this will be a book for the whole family, where families may get together in the comfort of their homes or other safe, secure, and positive learning environments, and share and build upon this rich history. Further, it is the author's and those associated with this project's belief that in re-telling this story, from a child-centered perspective, that each of us will resolve to reach out even more to those from diverse racial and ethnic groups in an effort to share our pasts, obtain a deeper appreciation of each other, and form a blueprint to work collaboratively to live in a nation and world of peace, equality, and social justice.

Toss out the essays, forget the boring lectures and don’t worry about memorizing dates. Take a tour through the history of South Carolina, the South and the entire nation with this collection of forgotten moments.

Dr. Tom Horton has sifted through the diary entries, old newspaper accounts and textbooks so you can make sense of it all. You’ll discover:

  • • How a contingent of Carolinians, led by Joseph Brevard Kershaw of Camden, failure to seize Little Round Top perhaps led to the end of the Civil War.
  • • Why leading cabinet and furniture maker William Enston of Charleston should be in any pantheon of leading philanthropists.
  • • How Thomas Pinckney, a respected soldier, governor, diplomat and even presidential candidate, became America’s forgotten founding father.
  • • And much more, including the little-told stories of why Napoleon’s sister-in-law was an American Hussy, why Indian fighters made the best Civil War Generals and what made John Rutledge so special.
It’s all collected in one book, and it’s a must-read for anyone who wants to understand how History’s Lost Moments helped shape the world as it is today.

The author tells about the origin and development of two Spanish romances: The Alfambra woman buried alive and The lovers of Teruel. The first recounts the infidelity of a lecherous woman, the Countess of Alfambra, who betrays her husband by delivering him to his enemy; and whose final dénouement is the defeat of the adulterous couple and their being condemned to death by being burnt at the stake. The “Story of the Lovers of Teruel” recounts the tragic life of one of the members of the Marcilla family, enamoured of a rich damsel who returned his love. However, her father’s refusal to consent to their marriage, and adverse fate which destined them never to consummate their love, led them to their deaths. Both stories, on the author’s opinion, who has studied the subject, had been together in the same codex when it was made in late Middle Ages. His anonymous author wanted to do exaltation of the noble family who ordered it, and at the same time to reflect the contrast: infidelity versus loyalty, false love versus true love. The later separation of one of the tales from the rest of the book gave it a different sense, because some people pretended to show the separated story as a real fact. It was the beginning of the Lovers of Teruel legend, which inspired many writers, painters, musicians, etc. to compose their masterpieces. In the second part of the book, the author, explains the origin and development of the subject along the time.

"The past holds valuable lessons for the future. Many people will find this book of interest." Lorne Calvert, Premier of Saskatchewan. Bessie Vroom Ellis's life is like a bridge between Alberta's pioneer past and its high-tech present. Dawn Sugimoto, The Lethbridge Herald "Bessie Vroom's story of her life on an Alberta foothills ranch fills a place in history that is not often told. She grew up in country that was as wild as the animals and birds that shared it with her. I knew the Vrooms and rode the same country with them. Bessie tells a great story! I chased horses in the mountains with her when she was about twelve and saw her ride her horse where a mountain goat would have hesitated. There she went, with her pigtails a-flyin', and her horse didn't turn a hair." - Andy Russell author of Grizzly Country In THE VROOMS OF THE FOOTHILLS: ADVENTURES OF MYCHILDHOOD, Bessie Vroom vividly recounts growing up on her family's Alberta ranch. With the towering Rocky Mountains as a backdrop, her stories are full of the hardships, rewards and fun of ranch life inthe 1920s and 1930s. With humor and affection, Bessie tells of: the loving guidance of her parents - Ralph, a dashing cowboy, and Mollie, a courageous ranch wife. riding "Paddy" to fetch the mail when she was only 4 years old. her first brood mare, "Rainbow", and starting her own herd. the cardinal rules for keeping herself and her horse out of dangerous situations. her father riding his bravest horse through a raging forest fire to rescue a crew of lost men. the terror-filled adventure of killing a marauding grizzly bear.
