Jeannie had been told by her doctor that she needed to lose weight. A hundred pounds! This story details how she accomplished that feat ... and medical difficulties that followed. During 2003, the year after her weight loss, she had a tummy tuck and thigh lift to remove excess skin, emergency gall bladder surgery, was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had Gamma Knife surgery, had a hysterectomy to remove the largest fibroid tumor the local hospital had ever seen, suffered Grand Mal seizures, and had brain surgery. How her friends and family pulled together creating a synergy of love strong enough to get her through is a heart-warming story. This is a story of love, caregiving, and the remarkable recovery from a series of medical challenges.

Menopause. Not a new subject, but one that deserves a new kind of presentation. Menopause is a universal female experience - and a uniquely personal event that no two women ever quite undergo in the same way. Menopause Maze presents the reader a Cliff's Notes<-condensed style format to read about this subject. Females worldwide can expect to undergo the menopause passage some time in their mid-forties to mid-fifties. This book focuses on changes - the good and not-so-good women live through. Even though menopause signals yet another passage in a women's physical life, it does not have to be a time fraught with confusion, embarrassment or fear. Menopause Maze provides a condensed, although comprehensive, overview to meet this state of life head on. From weight gain to exercise, from tears to laughter, from discouragement to empowerment, and from hating themselves to loving themselves, women entering menopause are poised on the precipice of patience, tolerance, acceptance and challenged with embracing change. This book contains information to help you approach this time in your life with dignity, confidence, knowledge and humor. It is about taking care of you. It is about feeling your feelings and perhaps, most importantly, offers reassurance that whatever you are feeling now, you are not alone. Through surveys, contemporary media, and research, we provide you with information that can be used to help you, and those around you, understand this particular time of your life. Menopause is a doorway to a richer exploration of life - a different freer phase. This guide allows you to examine the feelings you are experiencing, and you can read comments by other women like yourself who are going through this event. The questionnaires provide an avenue of self awareness - allowing you to answer questions on a variety of subjects pertaining to your health and well-being. But the book also goes beyond menopause in that it allows you to assess your life up to this point and encourages you to think about what is next for you - for the next thirty or more years of your life. Information on financial planning is provided by Art Burtscher. He provides valuable information for women who are at the age when they need to think seriously about what their individual financial future and retirement goals might be and plan accordingly. The last chapter encourages you to find balance and participate in personal asset mapping, thinking about your future and what your next phase of life might look like in the next 5, 10, or 25 years. This is a guide for you to begin thinking about the journey of Menopause and hopefully it will act as a spring board for you to continue to research the subject in areas that are particularly meaningful to you. Internet access sites are included at the end of most of the chapters along with note pages. We believe that you will appreciate reading this book and will benefit from having actively participated in the reading experience. Read, enjoy and be informed.

This book is the result of several years of research conducted in Denmark on the quality of life of more than 10,000 Danes. Quality of life (QOL) and health are not the same. QOL is the state of being or existence of the person, while health is the state of body, mind and spirit. QOL is the state of your totality, your wholeness. QOL is influenced to some degree by our health, but much more, according to contemporary scientific knowledge, by a few core dimensions of life related to love, consciousness, gender and sexuality. In this book you will find the following: Theory of holistic healing, existential holistic group therapy * Group intervention, therapeutic touch as a classic art of healing * Tools for holistic medicine, biomedicine and the physician today * Lifestyle, health, psychoactive drugs, sex and quality of life * Chronic illness, pain, alcoholism, whiplash associated disorder * Coronary heart disease, cancer, HIV and quality of life The improvement of personal philosophy of life seems to be the essence of holistic medicine and helping the patient to assume more responsibility. This book is published by Hippocrates Scientific Publications, New Hyde Park, New York and distributed by Traford Publishing, Victoria, BC, Canada

"Do I have to get a shot, Mom?" the typical child asks on the way to the doctor. Fortunately, for most children, vaccinations occur only rarely. For children like Hannah, however, who live with the daily routine of coping with juvenile diabetes, shots are a way of life - indeed, a way of survival. Hannah's Heroes is based on the life of a real little girl named Hannah who lives each day to the fullest while fighting a life threatening disease. Hannah's story appeals to all children whether or not they have juvenile diabetes. The story depicts a friendship that overcomes the daily struggles of the disease. Hannah, like other children with diabetes, relies on her heroes - healthcare professionals, parents and friends - to help her live a "normal" life. Richly illustrated and emotionally charged, Hannah's Heroes will move you to join the rest of the heroes in helping children like Hannah to find a cure for juvenile diabetes. Hannah's request comes straight from the heart of a child. She wants everyone to join her and the many others in the "Walk for the Cure," sponsored around the world by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). This unique story will touch the hearts of young readers. Hannah is a "normal" little girl who is fighting a big battle. She needs help to do it. Children will relate to her need and feel empowered knowing that they could help by doing something so simple: going for a walk!

I was not in the nursing profession very long before recognizing the "miracle" of the human body. In fact, I remember while in nursing school, just sitting in awe as we learned all about the body systems and how they interact with each other! It was while I was in LPN school that the Lord showed me the parallel of His blood to our blood. You can read about it in the devotion "Life is in the Blood". In this little book I have taken a nursing concept and applied a biblical principle resulting in a daily devotional for 31 days. It is intended to bring encouragement and inspiration to nurses as well as other healthcare professionals. All the devotions have an individual title and scripture reference. Also, at the end of the daily devotion there is a special prayer I have prayed for the reader. My goal is that for all caregivers who read this little book of devotions to be assured that the Lord is here to help them in whatever need they may have. He is a personal God who knows and cares for us individually! Secondly, my goal is to help all caregivers to see how important they are to the service of the Lord. It is through our hands and words that He often ministers to His people who are sick. The reader will also get a special treat with two poems written by Belinda Looney. While reading "Expectations" one will identify very quickly with the early (and comical) expectations of a fresh nursing graduate! "A Nurse's Prayer" is a poem expressing how many of us feel about nursing but are unable to convey as beautifully as Belinda has.

Welcome to the 21st Century, where we have become a society of "multi-taskers" and can incorporate that mind set into our fitness training. Over the last few years boxing and kickboxing have become popular forms of fitness training in North America for those looking to progress beyond the Tae-Bo, aerobic-kickboxing and boxercise type format. This book details how to get a calorie burning cardiovascular & resistance workout combined with learning valuable self-defense skills. The routine is also a dynamite way to build self-confidence, agility, coordination, stamina and relieve stress. Complete with a wide variety of topical information on both general and specific components of fitness, it is professionally detailed with over 300 photographs depicting every punch and kick technique combination. From the warm-up, strength exercises, abs routine and cool down stretches it is designed to ensure safety and efficiency in planning your fitness regiment. The exercises are fully explained, and sample workouts are provided allowing you to determine the intensity of your workout based on your fitness and skill level. Tailored to your goals, it makes an ideal, fresh, innovative and personalized workout. The training can be structured into 2 or 3 minute rounds with 30-60 second rests to replicate actual boxing & kickboxing rounds. Concentrating on the various challenging and stress relieving kick & punch combinations enhances mental focus and discipline. It can also be implemented as the warm-up or cardio portion of your regular routine or as an additional alternate session format tailored to your goals and needs. All the equipment required, like boxing gloves, heavy bags and focus pads are portable and the initial expenditure is fairly modest compared to some elaborate home gyms. The additional strength and resistance exercises incorporating the stability ball, medicine ball, resistance tubing and free body exercises keeps the program unique, easy to modify and can be taken with you when traveling or at work. So grab your wraps and gloves and "get ready to rumble" your way to fitness.
