And as Mr. Arnold went on believing old Mae (his oldest and best picker) was oblivious to his little secret… old Mae had a few secrets of her own, which left the wealthy plantation owner clueless to what would be his own undoing… yet old Mae couldn’t hold a candle to Pleasant, who stayed royally humble, as he went about helping everyone around him. But not even Ella knew what Duval took to the battle field with him. And while Clora Lee and Cowayne held more secrets than anyone could count, Sistah often kept the two young adventure seekers off balance, with her double life. Yet the secret, the Arnold’s oldest daughter held close to her chest, was sure to come to light one day. Winter’s Rain tells the story of a time when life remained an unfair spiritual war game. It was a time when there were uncertainties and untold mysteries—and for some, fame. It was a cold day in hell, where no one could tell what it was like living in a jail cell. It was a time when challenges spread their way across the sky and when great torrential downpours and blocks of ice astounded more than the pounded dough of the American pie. It was when heavy winds ruled over rough terrains pooled in the distillation of predatory fears. It was a time when the merchant of death ruled like a plague with no breath, but not without the pain of knowing persistent suffering once again. Winter’s Rain uniquely portrays hidden sadness and loneliness. Of the many that embarked upon this sad and lonely journey, far too many lay in waste due to unattended gurneys. All have been consumed by the bombardment of fear. All have fallen prey to its savage rival steer, for not even hell can resist the stall of innocent pain when nighttime falls upon the dream of life during a writer's Winter's Rain.

Mr. Hague constantly reminded his students to think carefully before making a decision. Some students appeared to be attentive to his suggestion, others resisted his advice, and a few were neutral.

An AIDS assembly, sponsored by the State Education Department provided Mr. Hague an opportunity to reinforce his advice on decision making concerning sex. The assembly presenters discussed sexually transmitted diseases in graphic terms. A class discussion following the assembly indicated that a number of students were happy they attended the assembly, others continued to believe adults only get AIDS, and the remainder of the class appeared to be totally confused.

At a later time Mr. Hague was totally shocked and disappointed when he learned about the decision one of his high-honor students made concerning her prom date.

Alcibiades was considered the best looking man in Athens, cute as a baby, pretty as a boy, and handsome as a man. He grew up in the household of Pericles, the greatest democratic Greek of them all, and the builder of the Parthenon. Alcibiades was also Socrates favorite student, the greatest Greek thinker of all, builder of the Western philosophical tradition. Perhaps no one else in history has had such an auspicious beginning. But he was born into difficult times as his life nearly perfectly coincided with the Peloponnesian War, that battle between Athens and Sparta that was mutually catastrophic. He was a great military commander and a leading advocate of war but was equally a philandering lecher. He was prone to controversy and nearly always found trouble. The driving element of his story is that during the war he switched sides three times. Athenian to start, then Spartan, then Persian, and finally Athenian again. Appointed commander of the ill-fated Athenian expedition to Sicily, he was recalled to face charges of religious sacrilege. He escaped to Sparta with advice for the King regarding the best way to defeat the Athenians. His advice was perfect and well taken but his carnal relations with the Queen sent him on to Persia. He arrived there with advice to the King regarding the best way to defeat the Athenians and Spartans. His advice was perfect and well taken but he longed for home and talked his way into becoming an Athenian commander again. But his betrayals could not be forgotten and his end was near. His formidable natural gifts were finally brought to bear upon his own undoing. Being handsome, well spoken, rich, privileged, and brilliant could not prevent him from also being arrogant, ruthless, cruel, devious, and in the end, the single person most responsible for the defeat of Athens in the Peloponnesian War.
