The book chronicles the life of an Austrian couple and their young daughter, who came to live in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) in the late 1920s. It describes how the head of the family, the future Government Sociologist of Tanzania, started out as a wealthy planter, and was then forced by the world economic situation into looking for other work, which took the family all over the country. It tells of their lives under very basic conditions and how his wife and daughter had to cope with their changed circumstances. The story also contrasts the life of the daughter in the African countryside with her experiences in a brand-new Mission school. The book shows how despite hardship, the family managed to make the best of their lives, having adventures along the way. It records the friendship they enjoyed with the Africans, and the interest the family had in their lives, their music and dance.

Gwen was introduced to booze and was sexually abused from a very early age, then quickly graduated to drugs. She has spent much of her life in prison, and is now serving a life sentence. In spite of these circumstances, she has long had a reputation for helping other people and has blossomed even further recently, obtaining a GED in prison, and will soon have her associate’s degree. Fred grew up with all possible support from loving and intelligent parents, graduated high in his class from Annapolis, got much further education, like Gwen had a reputation for helping others, made far more money than he ever needed, so gave much of it away, then after retiring with a modest income, had his remaining life savings extorted away by the aforementioned crooks. He and Gwen grow more deeply in love every day.

This book was written to help people. Even though the first chapter has a lot of religious content in it, this book is not all about religion. I believe in God, but there is so much more I truly believe that will benefit all people. The Learnings of a Lifetime Explanations of universals laws, religious laws, life’s lessons, and work-related wisdom (And I’m still learning every day.) Take every sentence and paragraph and stop and reflect on it before you move on to the next. If you read the whole composite and don’t do this, you will likely not learn or remember 99 percent of it. Study it. When you reflect, ask yourself, what is the message? (Lesson of life, lesson of business, lesson of values and morals.) What is this person trying to convey to the reader? Then you will retain it, pass it on, and hopefully use it for a lifetime!

This book in its totality of two volumes has various facets: it is comprised of anecdotes and thoughts on travel, research, and teaching in Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico from 1962 to 2000; it is a reflection on important topics and concepts of pre-Columbian culture, and finally, it is a summary of classroom guidelines and Professor Curran’s notes on a major work on the civilizations of pre-Columbian Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico and important documentary films on the same. Volume II treats Mexico. An introduction and overview of the sites in Mexico is seen in text and photos from the Museo de Antropología e Historia in Mexico City, the best of its kind. Again, volume II treats modern urban cities and rural towns near the pre-Columbian sites: Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Cristóbal de las Casas, and Mérida in the Yucatán. The well-known pre-Columbian sites in volume II are Teotihuacán, Monte Albán, Mitla, Palenque, Uxmal, Chichén-Itzá, and Tulum. The majority of children who survived the Holocaust, whether in hiding or in labour and concentration camps, remained silent about their wartime experiences.

Those who wanted to talk, were often silenced by well-meaning adults who advised them to forget the past and get on with their lives.

The memories and traumas simmered for nearly forty years, each child growing into adulthood thinking they alone struggled with the problems of traumatic memory, identity confusion and other consequences.

In the 1980's, there was a stirring of awareness amongst some child survivors about issues to be addressed. Small groups formed in the U.S.A. and Canada and gave birth to the child survivor movement, culminating in a large international gathering of "Hidden Children" in New York in 1991.

This book comprises a compilation of talks offered to child Holocaust survivors, over a 25 year period - from the birth of self-awareness to present day awareness of the need to inform the next generations of their parent's experiences.

Dasberg, Krell and Wiesel are themselves child survivors. Moskovitz founded the Los Angeles Child Survivor group following her pioneering study of child survivors. Gilbert has written and lectured extensively about children in the Holocaust.

This book offers the child survivor an opportunity to reflect not only on survival but its effects. For the spouses and children it clarifies some of the dynamics unique to their families and for Mental Health professionals it provides insights into the effects of trauma as well as the remarkable resilience of traumatized children.
